A great article on when to find an upholstery pro :-) Plus they give a shout to to the National Upholstery Association!
And, a final answer to recovering vs. reupholstering.
I love how Rachel from Knox Upholstery said it - the response has been amazing and we're so excited to see what's next!
You know what happens when people work together toward a common purpose? Change. The amount of interest and support we have received from the global upholstery world has been inspiring. The fabric companies and suppliers that jumped on board immediately is amazing. The upholstery community needed a change and it’s coming July 1st, when you, too, can get involved. If you have extra skills, outside of upholstery, we want to hear from you. We have plenty of committees formed and we are looking for upholsterers willing to get involved and help. After all, this organization was built by upholsterers, for upholsterers.

If you are an upholsterer please share this to help us spread the word. We'd love to have you on board!
I've been working with a national group of upholsterers to start this association. It's so exciting!

New fabric for the seat cushions of this custom sofa.
This chair got a whole new look! First, the client painted/distressed the exposed wood. Next, we took the loose cushion off and made an attached seat cushion. Lastly, we redesigned the fabric layout so there was less piping - giving it a more sleek/modern look.
Always more to learn :-)
Audrey from Sewing Den LLC in Virginia is one of our students this week - she’s recently been asked to do upholstery work for a local clinic, and vinyl is still relatively new territory. No worries AT ALL - Audrey is a fantastic seamstress with a background in both quilting and drapery. So today we spent time just exploring vinyl as a medium - what it likes, what it doesn’t, how to make it play ball. She did one sample with with heating and pulling and one with a top-stitched boxing. I hope you’ll zoom in and check out her pattern matching - that had zero to do with me, btw. Audrey already knows how to line those puppies up 💪 I hope she’ll have new confidence to go home and bid projects that may have caused some hesitation before. Professional upholstery is far more than pretty chairs ....

So great for families and/or pets.... or clumsy people 😄. You can check out the selection at http://www.greenhousefabrics.com or send me a message and I'll bring my sample books to you.
When a fabric says it has "xx,### double rubs".... This is the kind of machine that tests how many rubs it can handle. Cool!
How double rubs are tested!
A great article about using welt cording in an upholstery project!

Upholstery welt serves two important functional advantages: it helps conceal & reinforce seams, and improves durability by preventing excessive cover wear at the edges Let's make the distinction between single welt & double welt Single welt is generally machine sewn - either into a cushion: Single,....

Happy September everyone! I hope you had a great summer. Everything is humming along here at Sewing Den. I want to take a moment to introduce you to Greenhouse Fabrics. They are a fabulous line of fabrics that I've started selling. They have a great variety of upholstery fabrics - including the wonderfully life-friendly Crypton and Revolution fabrics. I still accept whatever fabrics you want to bring my way from local and online stores, but I'm hoping that by selling Greenhouse Fabrics it will give my clients some new great fabric choices. I've got tons of samples that you can see here at the Den, or I can bring them to you, so you can see them in your own home. Check them out! http://www.greenhousefabrics.com
As I made a couple of deliveries tonight, I got to see some of the DIY talent of my clients. I saw some dramatic home painting before and afters. So cool! I'm not big on painting, I'm more of a textile gal myself 😊, but it reminded me that everyone's got their creative side and/or DIY talent. So let that shine!
Two fabrics + nail heads = WOW!
I love this transformation!
Pillows, pillows, pillows! 😄
Lovely diamond tufted chair with nail heads. ♡ PS - Pattern match pic in the comments.
Hooray for the NPS rangers turned Upholsterers! Saving the trees... one chair at a time.... :-)
As an industry, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about how we used to train professionals in the U.S., and how to bring those programs back.
There’s just one problem:
the industry today is very, VERY different.
What does the modern market really need? And how do we make it possible?
A good place to start is this: who IS the upholsterer of the future?
Before we can develop strategies and programs, we need to get clear about who we’re talking to.
This post kicks off a series on our blog. We’ll be sharing our ideas and thoughts around professional level education and we’d love to include you in the conversation. There are significant challenges ahead for the upholstery community...but make no mistake, there are also possibilities ❤️........
One more cushion to add to the mix lately. This one wasn't just a bench cushion, it was a 6" deep, 50" x 70", cushy almost bed size, for a custom reading nook. Loving that pattern match on the side boxing!
There's been a bunch of bench cushions lately... from 10 ft. long for a mudroom, to shorter cushions for window seats. Now just grab a book and have a seat!
I just love a good Before/After pic! Here's a his/her's set of recliners.
I usually just post pictures of some of the projects I've done, but this week is a little different. I'm down south in Tryon, NC this week for an Advanced Upholstery class. I'm very excited! New tips, tricks, and most of all... fellow upholstery peeps!
The class is at Custom Workroom Technical Center with Cynthia from @Thefunkylittlechair
Welcome to Sewing Den! My name is Audrey and I fabricate custom home décor and offer upholstery services for designers and individual clients. I specialize in custom upholstery, bench cushions, upholstered cornices, draperies, slipcovers, and pillows. Although I'm always up for a challenge if you have something that's not listed :-) I also offer repairs.
If you would like an estimate for a project, please send me a message with the following information: First, a picture... send a couple of pictures of the item you want reupholstered, or the window you want to cover, or the area where you want a cushion. Also, some details about the project... If it's a cushion - do you want piping? If it's a drapery - what length, what style, lined or unlined? If it's an upholstery project - are the cushions removeable?
My prices include labor cost and little items needed to complete the project, like zippers, thread, staples, etc. It does not include things like foam or fabric. If you need foam for a cushion, I need to know how deep you would like the cushion and I can provide a separate price for foam. For upholstery projects, I remove the old fabric, replace the dacron (the soft batting layer between the foam and the fabric), and then recover. Retying the springs, replacing the foam, etc. is an additional cost, so let me know if your piece needs some additional TLC.
Some workrooms/upholsterers sell fabric, and I offer Greenhouse Fabrics (http://www.greenhousefabrics.com). I also accept fabrics from other local and online stores, but I just need to see a swatch or read the specs for those fabrics, so I can be sure that it's right for your project. I can let you know how much fabric will be needed for the project and help/advice on what kind of fabric is needed. Some clients just have their fabric shipped directly to my workroom in Ashburn, VA and others like to bring it to me - either way works.
Thanks for stopping by and check out the pictures from some of my previous projects.
All the best!
Recovered patio set (chaise, 2 chairs, 2 throws)... This fabric just calls to be outside! Design by Barbara Quast Interior Design, made by Sewing Den. :-)
