This home was designed to enjoy the beauty of the North Carolina mountains not only from inside, but outside as well.

The large deck and porch offer around 1,100 sq. ft. of outdoor living space — perfect for relaxing, drinking coffee, spending time with family, enjoying the fresh air, or gathering with friends around the fire.

This bedroom was designed as a bright and peaceful retreat on the second floor, with beautiful natural light, high windows, and direct access to the mountain view.

Bringing Nature Into Interior Design

Why do some spaces just feel better to be in? A lot of it comes down to natural light, views, materials, texture, and how connected a room feels to the outdoors.

Our interior designer recently completed a course called Outside In: The Biophilic Workplace, offered by GreenMood, a company known for using natural materials — like preserved moss, cork, and lichen — to bring the calm and balance of nature into indoor spaces. Their approach focuses on how these elements can lower stress, improve air quality, and create rooms that feel genuinely safe and restful to be in, not just visually nice.

That's especially relevant here in the mountains, where homeowners want their homes to feel like part of the landscape, not shut off from it.

In a renovation, that thinking shapes a lot of decisions — where windows go and how natural light moves through a room, which materials and finishes feel closest to nature, how a room is oriented toward its best view, and how to design spaces that feel calm and safe to actually live in.

Better Materials. Better Decisions.

Choosing a countertop or wall surface isn't just about finding the right color. Durability, maintenance, fabrication, installation, and long-term performance all matter just as much.

Our interior designer recently completed a continuing-education course on New Generation Solid Surfacing, offered by Porcelanosa USA.

One material we're excited about from this course is Krion — a next-generation solid surface made mostly of natural minerals, seamless and non-porous, so it resists stains, bacteria, and everyday wear far better than many traditional surfaces. Unlike stone, it's warm to the touch — so a countertop doesn't feel cold under your hand the way granite or quartz can. It's also low-VOC, meaning better indoor air quality, and because it can be shaped and thermoformed, it opens up modern, sculptural design options that older surface materials simply can't do. It's a premium material, and it shows — in how it feels, performs, and holds up over time.

Continuing material education helps us guide homeowners through decisions for kitchens, bathrooms, feature walls, countertops, and other high-use surfaces — considering not just how a material looks, but how it installs, performs, and holds up over the years.

Designing Healthier Homes

A beautiful home should also make you feel good living in it.

Our interior designer, Inna Lysetska, just completed an AIA and IDCEC-approved continuing education course through Sherwin-Williams, Design's Role in the Healthy Home Movement.

Here's the short version of what it covers: how the materials inside a home — paints, finishes, surfaces — actually affect the air you breathe and the space you live in every day. Some materials off-gas, some trap moisture, some just wear differently over the years. The course looks at how choosing the right ones can mean fewer allergens, better air quality, and a home that holds up instead of breaking down. It also touches on biophilic design — bringing natural light, natural materials, and a connection to the outdoors into a space, because that affects comfort and wellbeing too, not just how a room looks.

For us, this isn't about a certificate on the wall. It's information we bring straight into real decisions on real projects — what goes into your walls, your floors, your finishes, and how your home actually feels to live in.

Why We Keep Learning
