If your chunky knit blanket isn’t looking quite how you expected, take a look at your loop tension.
Loose loops give your blanket a more open, relaxed look. You’ll see more space between the stitches, and the blanket will have a little more drape.
Tighter loops create a denser, more structured blanket. You’ll have less space between your stitches and a more compact finished look.
Neither is automatically wrong — but your tension will affect the finished blanket.
The biggest thing I recommend when you’re learning is to keep your loops as consistent as possible. If your loops start out small and gradually get bigger, your blanket can change size and texture as you work.
I personally aim for loops about one finger wide and try to keep that size consistent from row to row.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. You just want to find a tension that works for you and stick with it.
