You can picture the pillow or bedding you’d love to make—but perhaps you’re less sure how to begin.

How much fabric? Which zipper? How will you get that clean, professional finish?

After more than 35 years of making custom soft furnishings, here’s what I want you to know: you don’t need to know every step before you start.

Choose your project. Identify the part that feels unfamiliar. That’s where we begin.

My role as your teacher is to break those techniques into manageable steps, so you can move from “I’d love to make that” to “I made this.”

Does sewing an invisible zipper next to welt cord make you nervous?

Maybe you worry about getting too close to the welt—or not close enough. Maybe you’re afraid you’ll get everything sewn together only to discover the zipper doesn’t lie smoothly or look as beautifully finished as you hoped.

I understand. This is one of those techniques that can feel intimidating until you know the steps.

Once you understand where to sew, what to watch for, and how to handle those tricky areas, it becomes a technique you don’t have to avoid anymore.

And that’s what I want for you—not just a beautiful zipper, but the confidence to say, “I know how to do this.”

When was the last time you made something just for you?

As creative people, we often make things for someone else—a client, a friend, our home, someone we love.

But there’s something special about creating simply because you want to.

This hand-dyed scarf was one of those projects for me. And yes, I get to enjoy wearing something I created.

So here’s your Sunday reminder: You’re allowed to make something just for you.

Creativity can’t be rushed.
As makers, we know what it feels like to have a deadline getting closer while there is still beautiful work left to do.

And yes, deadlines matter. Our clients matter. Keeping our word matters.

But so does the creative process.

Beautiful craftsmanship needs room to breathe.

It takes time to measure carefully, cut confidently, match the pattern, work through the unexpected, step back, look again…and sometimes make a different decision than the one we originally planned.

That isn’t wasted time.

That’s part of creating something beautiful.

If you own a workroom or creative business, one of the most important things you can learn is to protect your process.

Communicate early.
Set realistic expectations.
Give yourself margin.
And when something needs more time, speak up.

You don’t have to sacrifice the quality of your work—or the joy you find in creating it—because you’re afraid to have a conversation about a deadline.

Your creativity is part of what makes your work special.

Protect it.
Nurture it.
Give it room to grow.

Because when creativity has the time and space it needs, beautiful things happen.

I had a thought while looking through years of photographs recently:

I may have more pillow photos than any other human on earth.

My husband might call this a pillow problem.
I prefer to call it research.

Some of these pillows have even traveled with me to live presentations over the years. If you’ve attended one, you may recognize an old friend or two.

And I’ve barely scratched the surface of the photographs I found.

I love walking before the sun comes up.

This morning, I found myself walking by moonlight. I looked up, took this photo, and when I saw it on my phone, I smiled.

It looked like an angel to me. 🤍

Maybe it was simply the moon, the clouds, and the light coming together at just the right moment.

Either way, it felt like a beautiful reminder to look up, slow down, and notice the beauty around us.
