A note as July closes. The custom theaters and outdoor systems that homeowners ask us about in August are the ones being installed when fall arrives — in time for football season, in time for the long entertaining stretch that runs from September through the holidays.

Lead times this year are running eight to fourteen weeks for theater builds and four to eight weeks for outdoor systems, depending on scope. The Bang & Olufsen and other reference-brand equipment we specify most often for fall projects is being ordered now — if a project is on the calendar for fall, August is the conversation to have.

Bang & Olufsen occupies a specific position in the whole-home audio conversation. Not because it is the loudest, or because the specifications win a spec-sheet comparison — but because B&O has treated speakers as sculpture, and sound as design, longer than any other brand at this tier.

A walkthrough of a finished theater in Alpharetta — a project that began in October and was delivered to the family this past spring. Five slides through the design choices.

Slide one. The screen wall at scale, the seating positioned for the geometry of the room rather than the room arranged for store-bought seating.

Slide two. The acoustic ceiling — fabric-wrapped panels designed to look like architectural detail rather than treatment, hiding the reality of what makes the room sound the way it does.

Slide three. The integrated lighting reveal, with three scenes — Pre-Show, Film, Credits — each calibrated to the family's actual viewing habits.

Slide four. The seating, leather chosen by the homeowner's designer, with the riser geometry calculated to clear sightlines from every position.

Slide five. The room from the screen's perspective — every line of the design pointing the same direction. Eleven months of work, hidden inside a room that now looks effortless.

Designing outdoor technology for Atlanta is a regional discipline. The integrators who have only worked in dry climates underestimate three things.

Humidity. Equipment rated for outdoor use in Phoenix often fails inside two summers in Atlanta. The specifications matter — IP ratings, weather sealing, marine-grade hardware on coastal-adjacent properties.

Afternoon sun. The same brutal exposure that fades cushions destroys speaker cones and degrades projection screens. South-facing patios need different equipment than north-facing ones, full stop.

Pollen and storms. Two seasons of yellow dust on every surface, plus thunderstorms that arrive without warning. Systems built here are built to survive both.

A pool deck transformation across five slides. What changes is not just what is visible — it is what works without thinking about it.

Before: a pool deck with the basics. Lights on photocells. A bluetooth speaker in a planter. Two patio chairs that have seen a few summers.

After: integrated landscape lighting that follows the deck architecture. Outdoor audio engineered for the open geometry of the space rather than borrowed from indoor specs. Motorized shading on the covered seating area, on a schedule that tracks the afternoon sun. A single touchpanel near the door that controls all of it.

Outdoor systems are often misunderstood as a single category — speakers in the yard, lights along the path. What we actually design is a layered system that has to perform across four axes at once.

Audio that stays balanced from the dining table to the grill twenty feet away, without the speakers being audible as objects.

Landscape lighting that follows the architecture of the home and the geometry of the planting beds rather than dotting the lawn at fixed intervals.

Motorized shading on covered patios that drops on schedule as the afternoon sun moves west.

Climate-zoned outdoor heaters and fans integrated through the same Control4 or Crestron Home system that runs the rest of the home.

A note ahead of the long weekend. The Fourth of July weekend tends to bring out the homes we have worked on at their best — the patios filled with extended family, the pool decks running into the evening, the media rooms that hold the kids when the heat gets to be too much.

These are the moments the technology was designed for. None of it gets mentioned over the weekend. The audio just works. The lighting comes on when it should. The home holds everyone, the way it was built to.
