🤝Let me hold your hand while I say this: you may think you're being responsible and keeping meticulous paper records, but that pile of old bank statements is actually a liability. Every piece of paper containing personal account information poses an identity theft risk and steals valuable space in your files.
Most banks offer monthly statements via email and an archive of past statements on demand, but if you're the tactile type and just *need* to feel the paper between your fingers, give them an expiration date. At the end of the month. At the end of the year. Whenever a dispute involving them is resolved. Whatever you're comfortable with as long as they don't reside permanently in your home.

You probably have not looked at most of your owner's manuals since you began using whatever they go with, but their presence makes you feel more secure. While there are points to be made in favor of tossing all of them and instead relying on pdfs available online, most of us aren't so brave, and there are valid reasons for keeping some. Here's how to keep the collection in check:

📑 Be discriminating. You do not need to keep every instruction booklet. Some should be kept for warranty reasons, or if they belong with expensive or obscure systems and appliances, but you'll probably never need the instructions for a blender you have used for 10 years or a piece of furniture you have no plans to disassemble.
📑Declutter regularly. If you check right now, you'll probably find manuals for things you no longer own.
📑 Separate by categories that make sense to you and use binders, file folders, or shallow boxes to contain.
📑Designate a central location (all located on one shelf) or locations (washer/dryer manuals in laundry room, appliance manuals in kitchen, etc.) for storage.

📫How long do you keep greeting cards?📫
There is no wrong answer.
Greeting cards represent validation and acknowledgment - someone thought enough of you to physically mail a note inside a colorful card to celebrate an achievement, express sympathy, or just say, "hi".
For some people, reading the note and appreciating the card for a moment is enough, but others prefer to hang on to them a little longer, or even forever.
The trick is not to allow greeting cards to become clutter.
💌Be choosy about which cards you keep.
💌Set a deadline, ex: toss out Christmas cards by New Year's Eve
💌Take digital photos of cards you don't want to physically keep, but want to remember.
💌Creatively display extra special cards, or keep them in a decorative box.

Over hundreds of hours spent helping seniors downsize, I've found that china and dish sets inspire more feelings than any other category. That's because these are more than just plates and saucers. They're a lifetime of memories, and sometimes several lifetimes. They're reminders of a time when entertaining friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers was a significant part of life, and that can be difficult to let go of.
During the transition from one phase of life to the next, some of our possessions don't make the cut, but the emotions tied to them deserve respect. We can keep the memories (and maybe a place setting) while making room for the life we're living today.

Putting away your stuff and staying on top of laundry is easy when life is perfect, but can you maintain your space when life is life-ing? I work with my clients to establish organizational systems that feel intuitive and that they can sustain even during times when their spaces aren't their first, second, third, or even fourth priority.
