Fixing scratched tempered glass is a job I handle regularly. While it's common for me, it's often a first-time experience for my clients. Discovering scratches on newly constructed buildings or at the end of remodeling projects is highly stressful. Glass issues can be expensive and delay project completion, impacting profits significantly.
Consider a recent case in downtown San Diego. The client faced replacing costly scratched glass, which would have been a financial blow. When resurfacing a large area, the best practice, after scratches have been removed and pre-polish is complete, is to test polish an area in the center to be sure. The last thing you want is to get through the final polish only to discover swirls/haze due to an almost complete pre-polish. Once that happens, your two choices are to continue trying to polish the swirls away or go back and repeat the entire pre-polish steps. Both options greatly increase the likelihood of distortion and waste a lot of time.
Test an area in the center.
Polish the edges first, then finish with the rest. The edges are where most people have issues, so get that right first.

This one was a fun challenge (an otter exhibit at an unnamed park). Mostly because there was no level ground to stand on. Additionally the rocks near the glass are covered in a slippery moss making it even more of a challenge to maintain even pressure, flat on the glass.
The glass on this enclosure was covered in scratches to the point that is was difficult to even see through! not an ideal situation when people pay money to come see them.
In the end all 17 large panels were restored as close to perfect as humanly possible, no swirls, distortion or haze from the glass resurfacing process left behind.
