Accessible Design, Reimagined
This space began as a garage, became a playroom, and has now been transformed into something deeply meaningful: a thoughtfully designed wheelchair-accessible living suite on the ground floor of our clients’ home.
For the past two years, our client has not been able to live in their home because the second-story bedrooms were no longer accessible. This renovation brings them home.
Every inch of this room was designed with both function and feeling in mind. We raised the floor by 12" to create a flush transition with the rest of the home, allowing for seamless movement throughout the space. The modular wall creates separation between the bedroom and living areas while housing a double-sided fireplace, which brings physical warmth, visual softness, and a calming rhythm to the suite.
The rotating television can be viewed from the living room, the bedroom, and yes, even the bathroom. Accessibility, but make it clever.
The materials tell the rest of the story. Our clients’ love of nature comes through in the warm wood tones, mossy greens, soft plaids, layered textures, and landscape-inspired details throughout. The FLOR rugs were selected not just for beauty, but because their full rigid rubber backing performs like a hard surface under wheelchair wheels without catching or bunching.
The green bench serves as extra seating, a grounding design element, and a place for physical therapy to take place.
In the bathroom, the accessible vanity allows a wheelchair to pull directly underneath, with a pivoting mirror designed to be viewable at multiple heights. The roll-in shower includes a fold-down wood seat, double shower wands, and strategically placed grab bars that coordinate with the antique bronze finishes so they blend into the design instead of announcing themselves.
Accessible design does not have to feel clinical. It can feel warm, layered, personal, beautiful, and deeply connected to the way someone wants to live.
This renovation is about more than a room.
It is about homecoming.
