New scent, first time out. Pear Torte is made from scratch, glazed in pear and warm caramel, and it’s on our table right now at the Hollins Community Farmers Market in Southwest Baltimore.

Hollins Market is the oldest public market building still standing in Baltimore. It opened in 1839, a year after a windstorm knocked the first one down. That seemed like the right place to launch a fall candle.

You need to hear this. The mandarin in the Druid Hill candle is there because of the Osage orange trees in the park, and the coconut and jasmine are for the Caribbean community that lives in and around it.

When people from the neighborhood smell it at my table, they get it right away: I didn’t want to make another forest candle. Druid Hill is a park in the middle of a city, with a bike parked on the path and a reservoir that has been there since 1860, and the candle had to smell like that, not like a pine air freshener.

I shot these on July 6 between 7:14 and 7:25 in the morning, with the paths still wet. Mandarin and bergamot open it dry, blackcurrant, coconut and jasmine sit in the middle, and sandalwood and musk settle underneath.

Save this for the next wet morning. At 7:17 the paths were empty.

This Saturday, October 17, I'm at the Hollands Community Farmers Market, 1100 Hollands Street, from 9 to 2, with the full collection and bundles on the table.

Two more before Thanksgiving: Friday, October 30, Party on the Plaza at Lexington Market, 4 to 8.

Wednesday, November 11, and Thursday, November 12: the holiday winter market at the Mount Vernon Club, 8 West Mount Vernon Place. Wednesday, 5 to 8, and Thursday, 9:30 to 4.

Nobody talks about this. The Fells Point label has 10 words on the front:

“Anchored in port, sharpened in sea salt and dry cedar.” “In port” is how a sailor says it and “harbor” already belongs to Inner Harbor so the two never read as the same candle on a shelf.

I wish somebody told me this sooner: to layer one big room, you need one thing: two candles that share a note.

Fells Point shares juniper with Mount Vernon and cedar with patchouli balsam. One candle fills 450 to 550 sq. ft. on its own; in an open-plan, two lets you layer. Fells Point by the door, the other where you sit.

Have you ever noticed that Druid Hill still had color the week of Thanksgiving?

Shot these between 8:20 and 9:48 on the morning of November 25 last year, two days before Thanksgiving, and the trees around the swings were still holding orange. Druid Hill is 745 acres in the middle of Baltimore, with a reservoir that has been there since 1860, and on a weekday morning it is the closest thing this city has to a sanctuary from itself.

The candle opens the way the park does: dry mandarin and bergamot first, blackcurrant, coconut, and jasmine in the middle, then sandalwood and musk underneath, steady, like ground that's been there a while.

Save this, then come back in six weeks. The week of Thanksgiving looked like this.

You might disagree. Baltimore gets two waterfront candles, and they are not the same water.

Inner Harbor is marine and violet with tonka underneath: the harbor at six thirty in the morning. Fell’s Point is sea salt and moss with cedar under it: the port, before it fills up.

Have you ever noticed that three streets in one Baltimore neighborhood are named for the same woman?

Ann, Aliceanna and Bond, all in Fell’s Point, all for Ann Bond Fell. Her husband Edward laid the town out in 1763, and the street names came with it.

Shakespeare Street is two blocks long and the Fell family burial ground is at number 1607. The marker across the way at 1600 dates that property to 1770. One street over, the marker at 1537 Lancaster dates that building to roughly 1840 to 1855, so Lancaster is not as colonial as it looks.

I walked both of them on August 26, around 7 in the morning, and built the Fell’s Point candle from that walk.
