First time growing ranunculus! It started 8 months ago with re-building this tiny tunnel that’s a 3x hand-me-down. “Tiny Tun” is just 8’x20’, missing parts, and was cobbled back together using the least amount of investment as possible (other than our time). Although ranunculas love cool temps, in our USDA Maryland Zone 7 they require season-long coverage to be protected from excessive moisture and freezing temps. Too much water will cause the fall-planted corms (or roots) to rot in the soil.

I am learning and observing these plants. They aren’t as robust as I hoped but still sending up gorgeous blooms 🌸

Twas a great Valentines weekend with the ultimate cuties…sheep 😍 at the annual MD Sheep Shearing School in Hagerstown, MD. Students were amazing and teaching helps develop my skills and perspective.

I am available for small flock shearing this Spring before May 2026–the earlier the better! Weekends only. Inquire through the form on my webpage 💻 ✂️ 🐑

Give yourself something to look forward to this year. For my Baltimore folks, this one’s easy. An upfront cost secures four bunches of cheery blooms that are sure last all week, and then some. 💐

A winter farm walk to check on overwintering flowers shows everything is cozy and doing fine. Under all the snow (+ frost blankets) are snapdragons, bells of Ireland, campanula, and wild carrot. And Ranunculas are beginning to poke up through the soil in the tiny unheated greenhouse. I wanted to take a peak under the frost blankets, but can’t break the insulating seal the snow has created around the beds. Can’t wait for the blooms to start popping when the snow melts 🤗

2025 was another year of growth and generally just figuring things out for Woven Roots. We moved growing sites, constructed our first *tiny* tunnel, experimented with new flower varieties while cutting others out, and supplied flowers for DIY weddings and events.

2026 is full of more goals to achieve, some are already underway…Like adding refrigeration just for flower harvests, planting bulb and tuber crops, new flower subscription options, dismantling/transporting a large tunnel (future posts to come), and planning my time intentionally to bring more balance to my relationships.

I get asked a lot, “what do you do during the Winter” at both my regular job (also farming) and my business. The simplest answer is planning and reflection. This time allows me to set up a game plan to reference to when it gets hard to come up for air mid-season.

Other things I’m doing now instead of waiting until mid-season: planning my wedding, planning vacations and get-aways to look forward to, home improvement tasks, and decluttering.

Grow on in 2026. Let this year be of intentional focus on what you CAN do, ‘cause everything else is pretty good at breaking us down.

🌷 Shout out to my mom for driving all the way from Delaware just to help plant tulip bulbs and pull weeds 💪🏼

Just look at this staple length 👀 some sheep breeds, like Mr. Woodstock here, need two hair cuts a year in Spring and Fall 💇🏼‍♀️ Without it they get matted, too dirty, and develop skin issues. More wool = more fiber projects, right? 😀

Pray these babies 🙏 were expecting a low temp of 40F this week. Zinnias do not like to be cold below 50. These plants are strong and early on in their production this fall. So I’m hopeful (but not confident) these beauties will make it through to see and the sharp jump back up into warm fall temps again until frost truly hits later this season. I harvested as much as I could today to make bouquets and dry for later arrangements just in case.
🥶
If you can’t tell by this and previous posts, I really love zinnias. Tho it’s not a fav among floral designers because of their unpredictable vase life. Zinnias remind me of my mother’s front yard gardens growing up. My kid-brain remembers them as tall and bright and big as they continue to be in my adulthood.
