My first trip Heli skiing in The Caribous and Rockies in Canada brought a higher level of adventure and endurance than I had anticipated.
A whole different kind of fun and definitely out of my comfort zone.
The biggest challenge was working through my fear of being caught in an avalanche, then the daily unknowns of exploring new terrain with back country conditions including deep tree wells, cornices, uneven mounds of snow either hard or soft, various layers of snow conditions, and many mountain traverses, paired with the intensity of the helicopter flights, bundling of skis, ensuring the back packs are on with the clips and air bags set in place, and repeating all of this over 10 to 12 times a day until we wrapped it and arrived back at the lodge at 5:30, (no option for a half day) was exhilarating and exhausting. The pure powder runs were euphoric and quickly mixed with the fast turn arounds in and out of the machine. I experienced enough adventure to last me quite some time. There were definite moments when I asked Craig ”Why do you think I would like this?” And a moment later, skiing freely down the majestic mountain in pure powder, smiling ear to ear!
I’m glad I did it, we shall see if I get the urge to ever get in that zone again.
I express much gratitude for the Crescent spur lodge staff, the guides, the chef, and the overall high-end luxury family style feel- so wonderful. The camaraderie between the guys, the bonding that takes place during high adrenaline activity, the jokes, laughs and stories along with the generations of family members including 2 women this year including me, added a special kind of sentiment and poignancy to the trip. I felt much gratitude being guided by one of the top guides and experts in avalanche safety in the world, to be able to get to know him and all the other guides, the founder of the lodge, and so many interesting and fun people was over the top special!
A 25th anniversary trip, not to be forgotten.
