For our first official Junior Naturalist Workshop of June, we spent the morning digging through the curiosity table, making botanical bookmarks, and enjoying the native flowers that filled the shop.

One of my favorite things about these workshops is watching the kids be fascinated by our giant Tridacna clam, holding the huge pinecone, and discovering the all the items that they can take home from the curiosity table. Inevitably there are a bajillion questions and they get excited about nature.

Curiosity doesn’t have an age limit, the parents can take home something from the curiosity table too if they’d like 🥰

Today I headed to Hilltop Arboretum to pilot our new Microhike experience with their summer campers.

I explained that scientists can’t study entire forests or ocean floors all at once, so we take it one small (random) square at a time. Their meter square was a cardboard “observation frame” that they got to gently (mmhmmm) toss, then inspect everything inside as if they were as tiny as an ant.

With their specimen vials, tweezers, notebooks, and curiosity, we spent the morning exploring tiny bits of nature that most people walk right past.

We discovered burrows, half eaten grasshoppers, cool mushrooms, spiders and lots of ants.

At the end of the Microhike they chose an item that they discovered and found interesting for their vials. I asked if they thought they would have walked right past it if they didn’t slow down and take a closer look. It was a resounding “oh yea, for sure!!” 😉 The more closely we look, the more wonder we will find.

Three years ago today, I left a career I loved at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. My resignation letter was covered in pressed flowers and as many plant puns as I could think of.

At the time, Roots was just a spare-bedroom business and I had no idea if it would work. I was scared sh*tless.

Three years later, we’ve served over 500 clients, have two storefront spaces, an amazing little team, and it has connected me with people and stories I never could have imagined.

I do still miss my LDWF family and the years I spent as a fisheries biologist. That decade-plus of my life shaped me in ways I carry into Roots every day. I’m glad I took the leap, even though I’m still terrified most days. Growth and change are SO uncomfortable.

I’m incredibly grateful that my LDWF family has supported me through it all, through leaving them and through growing Roots.

Anyway, here’s to taking chances, even when they’re terrifying.

And a special thanks to my supervisors who let me submit this resignation letter with approximately 47 flower puns in it lol

What if I told you we were leaving this flower exactly like it is? 🫢

Most people think flower preservation is about making the flowers look as perfect as possible, and most of the time that’s true

Butttt it’s REALLY about preserving the memory, and this one had a good story…

This flower belonged to a bride whose grandmother accidentally singed one of the petals during the wedding festivities. She told us the story at drop off and we told her we would preserve it and see how it turned out. This was the result.

Instead of viewing it as damage, we saw it as part of the flower’s journey and kept track of the “burned flower” throughout the drying process, into the press and after. It sits on its own special piece of paper with a label, like the VIP that it is (very important…petal? Idk) 😆

Anyway, we are still deciding whether to incorporate it into the larger frame keepsake or to preserve it as its own standalone piece, but either way, it’s a small reminder that things can go wrong even at the most perfectly planned events and then they become our favorite stories to tell.

Side note: Did anyone else have a fire at their wedding? I did (also my grandmother, but it was a cloth napkin. I remember someone said “umm that old lady just set that table on fire”) 😂 How common is this? 🔥 🔥 🔥

Whoa… 2,000 of you are here.

When I (accidentally) started Roots Floral Preservation, I thought I was preserving flowers. What I didn’t expect was finding a community of people who love nature, memory, beauty, curiosity, and all the little things that give us the feeling of AWE.

To celebrate 2,000 followers, I’m giving away a handcrafted Resurrection Fern Ring.

This tiny fern was collected from a Louisiana live oak and preserved by hand. Resurrection ferns can survive months without rain, appearing dry and lifeless, then unfurling and turning green again after a good soaking. They’re a reminder that sometimes things aren’t gone, they’re just waiting for the perfect conditions to come back to life.
