I want to tell you about two friends of mine: one is named Michelle & one is named Maggie. Michelle has been a Thrifted Sister for many years & is a thrifting aficionado. Maggie is a 9-year old Scottish Terrier. Her dog dad had a stroke on March 14, & I picked her up the same night that they lifeflighted him to the hospital. On March 16, I discovered Maggie had bladder cancer & we’ve been on a heck of a journey ever since. I already had two dogs but we took Maggie in as one of our family. Many people who knew what we were up against sent contributions & donations. Michelle did too but she also sent a huge box of thrifted treasures—blankets, toys—all assigned for each pup to have their own stash of gifts. They had a blast—like toddlers on Christmas morning! I’d refill the box & they’d drag it around & dump it out again. In such a dark situation with Maggie & her dad, Michelle brought so much light.
Maggie’s dad is home now—I brought him to my house this week for an overnight visit. Maggie is doing as good as she can. Most days you’d never know she’s on borrowed time. If we ever see her struggle or see that she’s in pain, we will say goodbye. She has lots of meds & vitamins—raw goat’s milk & turkey tail mushroom powder have helped so much. But if you could see her dragging around her blanket & her stuffies from Michelle, if you could see that she eats like a little pig, & snores like a freight train all night, you’d see she’s ready for more sunny days & starry nights. The thrifting community is stellar. Michelle, Jane Gigi & others—they glow like lightning bugs in the dusky sky—their good deeds are here, there, & everywhere. And I’m so thankful for Maggie, too. She shows me daily that every day is a gift & what it looks like to not give up. There’s squirrels to bark at, & balls to chase, & gizzards to gnaw for this sweet pup. Thank you, sisters, for everything. ❤️🐾❤️
