Rattlesnake Calathea Care Tip
It’s called "nyctinasty" and it never gets old. Rattlesnake plants raise their leaves at night to trap moisture and lower them during the day to catch light!
How to keep them happy so they keep moving:
☀️ LightType:
Medium to bright, filtered, indirect light.
Avoid: Direct afternoon sun, which scorches leaves and bleaches their vibrant patterns.
Placement: Near an east-facing window or hidden behind a sheer curtain.
💧 WaterFrequency:
Water thoroughly when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry.
Type: Sensitive to tap water. Use distilled, rain, or filtered water to prevent brown, crispy edges.
Technique: Pour water until it drains from the bottom, then empty the tray immediately. Never let the roots sit in stagnant water.
☁️ Humidity & TemperatureHumidity:
Thrives best in 50% humidity or higher.Boosters: Use a humidifier, group it with other plants, or place it on a pebble tray.
Temperature: Keep your room between 65°F and 75°F.Danger: Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units.
🌱 Soil & FertilizerSoil:
Use a well-draining, lightweight potting mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark works perfectly.
Fertilizer: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter.

Crispy brown leaf edges: Indicates low humidity, dehydration, or chemical buildup from tap water.
Yellowing leaves or limp stems: A classic sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
Curling leaves: The plant is too dry, too hot, or trying to protect itself from excessive light.
Fading patterns: The plant is getting too much direct sunlight.
Fun Fact: Don't panic if your plant moves! Rattlesnake plants practice "nyctinasty," raising their leaves straight up at night as if praying, and lowering them during the day to catch light. It is also completely non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.
