I haven’t been doing a ton of stained glass lately.

But, I have been experimenting a bit with different techniques and materials.

I cast fruit loops, classic circus cookies and an Oreo in silicone to make a mold. Then, using frit (itty bitty bits of glass) mixed with a sticky binder, I was able to recreate them all out of glass. The fruit loops and circus cookie were painted and will go into my kiln at a high temp to magically transform it all into a solid glass shape!

I’m very excited to see what they will look like tomorrow when I take them out of the kiln!

It’s so wee, and I wanted to paint. I did a little sketch and then got as close as I could. Its is all traditional glass paint on

I’ve been doing a bunch of non-glass stuff lately, including making this coral reef fishy related coloring page! 🐠 🪸

I am also slowly painting up the owl. Kiln run 2 out of a zillion has just wrapped up so it’s slow and steady! After this run I’ll have the basic contour lines finished.

The glass painting is done layer by layer. Each layer goes into my kiln and heats to temp (somewhere between 1000-1200F). This permanently fixes the paint to the glass. Different colors tend to need different temperatures and generally the paint needs to be applied from highest temp paint to lowest temp (usually the silver stain). Glass paint is super brittle and delicate before it goes into the kiln. This allows for the painting to be done reductively - you can add a layer of paint and then remove little bits of it to add details, shading, etc.

Since I’ve been doing a bunch of more traditional art lately, I am reminded of how tedious glasswork tends to be 🫠. But, the end results are worth it!

My daughter is busy helping me get ready for the SLV Art Tour this weekend!

I’m artist #23, and I’ll have some of my work displayed in the garden for some relaxing forest perusal.

I’ve been doing these studies in traditional glass painting, which has been so fun. Definitely is a lesson in experimentation to get everything just so. 😅

For the butterfly, I completely borked the silver stain the first time. Then, I reset, and did a bunch more testers and tried again. Super happy with the results!

The serious business banana slug I will totally turn into a little panel. I have another version in the kiln now that I’m excited to see if the effect I’m going for will work.
