Ebb and Felt

Ebb and Felt Ebb and Felt. Needle felted sculptures by Erin Brown.

*Portions of all sales go toward Nimbus Farm Alpacas LLC, my family farm and source of alpaca fiber.

Ebb and Felt is a place to share my needle felted sculptures created by me, Erin Brown. Definition of "ebb and flow": an idiom referring to the recurrent or rhythmical pattern of coming and going, or decline and regrowth; used to describe something that changes in a regular and repeated way. This fits perfectly with both the art of needle felting with the recurrent, rhythmic stabbing of the needle

, slowly tangling fibers over time causing change in a repeatable and shapeable way - AND in the rhythms of life itself. My passions have always found themselves revolving around art and nature, inspired by the beauty, diversity, and complexity of nature. I discovered that needle felting is a meditative artform that allows me to recreate the intricacy of animals and capture their essence. Whether I'm creating a favorite animal, bringing back an animal from extinction, preserving endangered species, forging a creature from fantasy, or helping someone memorialize their beloved pet, needle felting has allowed me the opportunity to make it all possible. My family farm, Nimbus Farm Alpacas, was the catalyst for my felting journey. It is because of the magnificent alpacas I raise, love, and care for every day that I am able to utilize their colorful, soft, and beautiful fiber in my needle felting creations. Portions of every purchase go back to my family's farm to help feed and care for the alpacas. You can see the alpacas here: https://www.facebook.com/nimbusfarmalpacas

"Why does it cost so much?"

Today at the Farmer's Market where my family farm usually sets up our alpaca products I also put on display my current needle felted sculptures that are available for sale. Prices range by size, some are $250- Some are $400 with other prices in-between.

This question stings. It burries itself deep into my heart ❤️‍🩹 like the very same barbed needles I use to repeatedly stab the fiber an untold countless times.
Truth be told my prices are cheap, compared to other pieces of similar style, size and quality. Truth be told all art is undervalued and underappreciated.

My one of a kind- nothing will ever be the same as this unique sculpture that was most likely custom made, 1 of 1 piece of human made art "costs so much" because:
⭐️I have a BFA.
⭐️I spend literally hundreds of hours on my sculptures.
⭐️I hand paint eyes.
⭐️I sculpt, bake, and paint hooves, noses, claws, teeth, horns, antlers and beaks.
⭐️My fiber doesn't just materialize, it is harvested, processed, bought and individually picked for your specific project.
⭐️Needles dull and break, and must be purchased and replaced.
⭐️involved in the process includes scissors, flat iron, wire, wire cutters, paint, paintbrushes, acrylic markers, glass cabochons, clay, glue, horse hair, core wool, alpaca fiber, felting needles, modpoge, wax, wax melter, hair brushes, trimmers, rulers, foam mat... all of which need to be bought, replaced and techniques applied to be mastered.
⭐️My time and effort are more valuable than minimum wage- I am an expert in my field with a BFA, I have mastered a rare and unique skill which in itself holds value.

Artists are uniquely tormented by a cycle of needing to create art as part of our very being, pouring our lives, experiences, essence - countless hours of trail and error- into a piece of art... then offering that piece of ourselves that we have somehow manifested into physical form to be sold and appreciated by others, for them to then say... "but why would I pay money for that?" Or "why does it cost so much?" Or "can you do it as a favor?" " How about for exposure?" I could do that if I just practiced and learned."
Meanwhile the felted sculptures, the beautiful creations that represent shards of my own reflection are sitting there completely valueless in their eyes.
"$200 I thought it should be $20.".... if that 40 hour sculpture was $20, then I'm only worth less than $2/hour to you because you also have to factor in material costs.

Some of my patrons happily see the value, some of them have commissioned me multiple times and for them the price was exactly right. Some few wonderful people even say that I should charge more and that heals my often aching, defeated and broken artists heart. I understand that not everyone can afford it, that's why there are payment plans and custom ways I work with my wonderful clients.

If I can instil something in you from this discussion and my experience it would be this:
When you find yourself at an event, or gallery, or market and someone is selling their art...before you think (or say rather thoughtlessly) it's "too expensive," please consider the things you can't see behind the work- like the blood, sweat and tears, the irreplaceable hours of that artists life they spent failing, trying, perfecting their skills and the bit of their life that sits reflected in the work.

All art is priceless, but the artist must make a living so they try their hardest to assign a value to it that seems acceptable.
Even then, some confuse priceless with valueless.

Thank you to my friends, followers, patrons, and my family for supporting me. ❤️

Support human art because art makes us human.

Vending some of my handmade needle felted sculptures with my family farm, Nimbus Farm Alpacas!
Beautiful day in Berryville.
My sculptures incorporate alpaca fiber from our very own animals and portions of sales go back to the farm to support their care.

I wanted to thank Erin Berkery for putting together todays model horse swap! Bit O' Luck Model Horse Hobby Swaps 🐎 I had a very nice time vending my one- of-a- kind needle felted sculptures and chatting with so many people. I learned a lot about Breyer collecting, models, etc.
When I was little I used to have a very large, and cherished, collection of Breyer Stablemates, and over the years they have been donated or sold or lost to moves and time. I never really considered the possibility of trying to collect them again.
I only recognize/remember the ones I had by seeing them.
Seeing the boxes and rows of Stablemates I was transported through time and was able to rekindle old memories.
So my haul might be small, (and not nearly complete) and seem insignificant or trivial to a real collector, but to me it's priceless... and a start.

*I also got a tack set from Erin that fit wonderfully over one of my felted horses, and made it pop to life.

*and I was able to get a photo of my "Othello" next to a custom model that looked strikingly similar and wanted to share it.

I've been working on some 2D needle felted portrait commissions as well.
These are on 6"x6" canvas.
I like the look of the portrait on canvas but the pre-treated canvas is hard to felt on- so I might be using linen stretched canvas, felted sheets, or embroidery hoops, instead, we will see.

For information on a custom 2D portrait of your own animal- feel free to message me or visit my Etsy shop.

3D pet portrait of my Mom's horse, Ike.
The lighting in the photo still needs work as I am learning how to use my lightbox.
It is mounted in a 6"x6" frame with a needle felted background image as well.

I wanted to share my updated doe and buck White Tailed-Deer sculptures.

(This is my first time experimenting with my light box!)
I still like my in-nature photos, but this helps with detail. I also need to figure out how best to use it, the images came out a little darker than they are in person.

I was very unhappy with their original build, you can see them in a previous post. Their proportions are all wrong, and overall they lacked the realism I strive for. Like the fawn, they were a bit rushed the 1st time around. So I did what any sane artist would do and decapitated them, 🫣 worked on their heads to improve the realism and mounted them in a frame.

I do offer 3D portraits mounted in the frame just like these deer, so it is good to have another example of this kind of work.
Frame is 6"x6", it can sit on a desk/ flat surfaces and can be hung on the wall.

They can all be purchased together as a set as well, I will make them available on my Etsy shortly.
