Half the country is bringing paper and handwriting back into classrooms after years of schools shifting heavily toward screens.

North Carolina was an early mover, passing its “Back to Basics” legislation in 2013. Since 2016, the push to restore handwriting instruction has steadily gained momentum.

Today, at least 25 states require handwriting to be taught in schools, nearly double the number from a decade ago. Pennsylvania approved its requirement in February, New Jersey followed with legislation in January, and Idaho has also joined the movement.

Technology isn’t disappearing from classrooms. Students will still use computers and tablets.

The difference is that screens are increasingly being used alongside pencils and paper, rather than replacing them entirely.
