This one came from the Adirondacks. It’s really not in great shape, missing the rim entirely.

Another basket I brought home with me from Maine.

Woven almost entirely of braided sweetgrass

Another basket that shows almost none of its original color, only on the inside can we see how vibrant it once was.

Day 11 of posting my basket collection:

This picnic basket I just had to buy when I saw it.
It caught my eye right away because of the coloration in the uprights, which only comes from the very first layer of splint off of the log.

I don’t recall where I acquired this one.
Lots braided sweetgrass throughout

Day 9 of posting my basket collection:

Found at an antique shop.
Has some really nice color on the inside.

Made with sweetgrass and Hong kong cord.
I’m not sure if there’s another name for this cordage, but it was used in many baskets throughout the 20th century.

Day 8 of posting my basket collection:

This one I brought home with me from my trip to Maine.

The dye tends to fade over time from sunlight. I always find it interesting to see the inside where the color still remains and imagine that at one time the whole basket was that color.

I feel fortunate that I was able to make that trip and have found a real appreciation for Wabanaki basketry.
Can’t wait to go back!

Day 6 of posting my basket collection:

This was my first attempt at a shopping basket. Made in 2024, freehand.
Made some changes to it about a year later.

This basket along with my day 4 basket won a first place ribbon at the New York State Fair in 2024.
