And just like that… the Brooklyn Fair is in the books! 🔥🍗

I'd love to share a bunch of pictures from the weekend, but apparently when you're working the fire pit for four straight days, you don't take many pictures. 😂

It was four very long days, a whole lot of chicken, plenty of smoke, sore feet, and another great weekend with our Troop 44 family.

Our annual Chicken BBQ is a huge undertaking, and it takes an entire team of Scouts, leaders, parents, families and volunteers working together to make it happen.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by, bought a chicken dinner, supported the troop, or simply came over to say hello. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and that support means a lot to our Scouts and the program we're able to provide for them.

For our family, weekends like this are also a good reminder of one of the reasons we value having a family-owned business. Sometimes the shop needs to go quiet so we can be present for the other things that matter to us.

But after four days around the fire pit, I'm more than ready to trade the smoke and chicken for lasers again. 😂

JG Creations is back in the shop this morning!

Thank you to our customers for your patience while we were away. Now it's time to get caught up and get back to work.

For the next four days, JG Creations is going to look a little different.

The shop is basically shutting down while our family heads to the Brooklyn Fair for one of the biggest weekends of our year.

We’ll be working with our Scouting America Troop 44 family at our annual Chicken BBQ — the troop’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

This is very much a family affair for us. Aimee, Anthony, Vinnie and I will all be there working as part of the team, along with our Scouts, leaders, parents and volunteers.

And me? The fire pit is where I live. 🔥🍗

For the next four days, I’ll be tending the pit and cooking a whole lot of chicken.

JG Creations is a family business, and Scouting and our community are a big part of who we are outside the shop. Every once in a while, the lasers and presses have to go quiet so we can put our time somewhere else that matters to us.

If you’re headed to the Brooklyn Fair this weekend, come find Troop 44, grab a chicken dinner and say hello!

We’ll be tired, probably smell like smoke, and I can pretty much guarantee we’ll be having a good time. 😂

The shop will be back up and running Monday morning.

Apparently I needed another hobby that involves experimenting with variables… 😂

Meet S’more Dough.

A couple weeks ago, I decided I wanted to try making sourdough. That meant first creating a starter from scratch. And, because apparently I’m incapable of just casually trying something, it quickly turned into feeding schedules, hydration ratios, fermentation times, stretch-and-folds, proofing, shaping, scoring…and a whole lot of “I wonder what happens if I change this?”

Somewhere along the way I realized this was starting to feel suspiciously like work — change a variable, see what happens, make an adjustment, and try again.

Apparently I go home and relax by doing more R&D. 🤦‍♂️

But after watching S’more Dough bubble away on the counter and wondering more than once whether I actually knew what I was doing, we finally made our first sourdough boule.

And I have to admit…

I was pretty darn proud of that loaf.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about starting with a few basic ingredients, learning the process, screwing a few things up along the way, and eventually making something with your own hands.

So there you have it — this week’s completely non-laser-related adventure from JG Creations.

S’more Dough lives. And apparently we’re making bread now. 😂🍞

New product just landed at JG Creations!

We've got some brand-new 20 oz ceramic-coated tumblers in the shop, and naturally, I couldn't just leave the box sitting there unopened.

Next question: What can we do with them?

Time to get one under the laser and find out. Stay tuned!

Sometimes improving what you can make starts with improving what you can see.

An R&D project we're currently working on pushed the limits of the inspection equipment I had in the shop, so this week we added a new digital microscope to the toolbox.

And naturally, once it was set up, I had to see what our lasers were "really" doing.

The results have been pretty fascinating.

That photo engraving might look like a smooth grayscale image to the naked eye. Get close enough, though, and you can actually see the individual marks created as the laser beam rapidly fires while moving across the material. Thousands upon thousands of incredibly small marks ultimately become the image you see.

I also started experimenting with our UV laser to see just how small I could program features and still detect the resulting marks under magnification. Seeing what happens at that scale gives me an entirely new way to evaluate beam characteristics, settings and machine calibration.

And that led to another realization...

I've spent years learning, testing and calibrating these machines to get the level of precision we achieve today. Now that I have a tool that lets me see details I couldn't see before, I want to go back and check those calibrations again.

Because "I can't see anything wrong" isn't quite the same thing as "there's nothing wrong."

That's one of my favorite things about this business. A customer brings us a challenging project, we invest in another capability to solve it, and suddenly that new capability gives us a way to improve everything else we do.

The technology is impressive.

Learning how to get the most out of it is the fun part.

Sometimes the most interesting projects are the ones we can't show you.

We're doing some R&D work this week for a new engineering customer who came to JG Creations with an interesting challenge.

This one isn't simply a matter of loading a part into the laser and pressing start. It involves our UV laser, some custom fixture design, precise positioning, tight tolerances, and quite a bit of testing to determine whether we can develop a repeatable process for the customer.

For obvious reasons, the actual parts are staying under wraps.

But the tools on the bench probably give you an idea of what kind of morning we're having!

Projects like this are one of my favorite parts of running JG Creations. Sometimes a customer doesn't come to us asking, "Can you engrave this?"

They come to us asking:

**"Do you think you can figure out how to do this?"**

Those are the fun ones.

We had a wonderful morning helping the Danielson Veterans Coffeehouse as both a member of Brooklyn Business Association and Scouts BSA Troop 44 - Brooklyn CT.
Our family is all looking forward to being able to help again.

Community is at its best when people step up for one another.

Today, the regular Walmart volunteer crew that normally helps at the Danielson Veterans Coffeehouse food distribution in Putnam was away and unable to assist. The veterans who organize this incredible event put out a call for help, and several Brooklyn Business Association members answered without hesitation. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to support an organization that works so hard to make sure anyone in our community who needs food has access to it. We’re proud to have members who are always willing to lend a hand.
