Lots of flight action in the bee yard today.

in times of scarcity drones (boy bees) are evicted and kicked out of the hive, for instance in the fall before winter, but I often find drones that make it through and come out to stretch, cleanse and groom in the winter.

It’s been a very cold, snowy winter here, but the bees are holding strong.

I stepped out today to clear a few entrances and listen for signs of life… and I was so happy to hear some buzz in 10 out of 11 colonies.

I definitely talk to the bees.
It usually goes something like this:
When we’re getting along — “You’re so beautiful, you’re doing such a great job.”
When they’re in a mood — “I know, I know… I don’t like you either.”
When I can’t find the queen — “Where the heck is your mama?”
And when there’s insane burr comb — “Bees, why did you make such a mess?”

I’m pretty nerdy about my hive notes. After each inspection, I record a quick voice memo on my iPhone to capture everything I just saw. Later, I transcribe those into my hive notes spreadsheet—where I can track entire queen lineages and even visualize data by apiary, in grids, or sorted by which colonies need attention next. I log a lot of data points—because, well, I’m a nerd

31 Days of Bees: Day 2 - Describe the perfect beekeeping day
Honestly, every day at EAS (Eastern Apicultural Society) feels like the perfect beekeeping day—learning, laughing, and sharing with friends.
But in the bee yard, my idea of perfect is simple: the bees are calm (and so am I), they’re their usual sweet and beautiful selves, and we move through a relaxed, no-rush inspection together.
