Bags and Blankets etc by Cyndy

Bags and Blankets etc by Cyndy Sixty plus years after I first learned to sew, I am actually sewing as a hobby business. By Spring, it was clear that I needed to find a new outlet.

While I have sewn everything from clothing/mending to costumes to all sorts of bags and blankets during those years, it has been for family, friends, and charitable organizations. The first bag I made was a purse way back in the 70's and then a diaper bag when I started having children. Once my husband started the organic produce business in the 80's, I made shopping bags to sell at our stand at

the local Farmer's market to reduce the need for our customers to use plastic bags. Some were made of "funky" fabric and even old jeans from my husband and sons but always fun. I have become the proverbial bag lady making bags for each of my jobs as a registered nurse and even color coding the bags for each of the courses I taught at the College of Nursing. During the 2 years before I retired from teaching, I made these wonderful sturdy work bags for the graduates each semester knowing how much these new nurses would need them during their career. Sewing the blankets started with preparing for the birth of my own children in the 80"s. They were simple block quilts in all different colors and textures of fabric but also with the satin binding reminiscent of my childhood blanket. I have lost count of all the baby blankets I made for family, friends, and coworkers over the years. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina occurred, I added making "throws" for people devastated by this disaster. It fueled my love for colors and textures in fabric and I ended up making two of each blanket--one to give away and one to keep for potential grandchildren. My stash of blankets and throws outgrew my storage area so then I would very reluctantly have to let go of some of them. Thanks to the gift of a lot of fabric from friends who inherited it from relatives, I have continued to make bags and blankets to give away to many charitable organizations during the years. Gradually I started hand quilting baby blankets as a way to keep my hands busy and helping me focus during meetings, church, and even when chatting with friends. While I have do some basic piece quilting and machine quilting, I actually love so many of the patterns on the fabric, that I prefer to hand quilt around some of the figures rather than cutting up the pattern. It definitely takes a lot more time to do these especially with attempting to quilt around many of the figures in order to secure the blanket well. So when I retired from my fulltime teaching position in December of 2022, I was committed to using up my out- of-hand stash of fabric. I spent the winter of 2023 hibernating and sewing mostly bags and blankets. I started by going with my friend and neighbor, Crafty Granny Cheryl, to a local craft fair sponsored by a the Home and Community Education organization. This organization is loosely connected to the Farm Bureau and I had started sewing with our local groups making weighted blankets for children with autism. Having then taken some time to finish a few of my own quilt projects during the summer, I started sewing more bags and blankets as well as some of other craft items in preparation for the Christmas Craft sale in November. So, now I will be posting photos and prices for the items I have and continue to make. I will do custom made items as well, but will need to have a discussion regarding specifics and the time frame. I do not have a specific website, but can be contacted via this FB site, via email, via messenger, and even by phone as long as you text me first. I can take credit and debit cards online or in person if that is more convenient but haven't moved into the world of venmo. Delivery outside of my local communities would add the cost of delivery. If nothing else, look at the photos and enjoy the varieties of colors and styles.

So I finally decided to finish the quilt blocks that a friend’s mother had started. I have done an occasional quilt block small blanket but not too often. So I have twelve 9 x 9 inch blocks done with the pieces for two more ready to sew. My dilemma is whether to make them into a “throw”/lap blanket or use them to make a bag(s). I want to complete this with fabric I already own rather than buying more fabric, so I would have to use this plain red as I don’t have any other fabric that matches. If I do a throw, I can’t decide how to lay them out. I figure I could do 4 rows of 3 blocks across with the red strips between and on the outside of each block being 5 inches to make the throw approximately 45 inches wide and 52 long.
But, I also thought about making one more block up and doing an X using 6 blocks on each arm of the X with the 13th block in the center. It would make it approximately 60 x 60 inches. The only reason I hesitate to do the X is because the confederate flag is an X. I know it isn’t the same pattern but I am very opposed to anything that might promote values of slavery or white supremacy.
I have some strips of fabric in the blue and the stars that I might be able to use for the binding but I don’t have any more of the red print.
Can I get some opinions or maybe other ideas? If I used them to make a bag, I probably have enough for a couple medium size tote bags which I could line with a complementary patterned fabric.

I finally finished a blanket I have been working on for months. To explain, for the blankets that I hand quilt around some of the figures, I only work on them for short periods of time each week so that is what takes me so long. Never the less, it always feels good to finish. This one is child size (41 x 51 inches). It is a pinwale corduroy which is quite soft backed with the variegated pink cotton. Of course it has the satin binding that I have loved since my childhood. I had enough fabric left for a pillow and a small cosmetic bag.
Since I sold a number of bowl cozies last weekend, I made a few more this week in 3 different sizes.
I have a bigger space tomorrow at the Harvest Moon Spring Craft and Vendor event in Gibson City so I will take all the blankets I have even though it is not necessarily blanket season.

Even though bowl cozies seem to be used more in the colder months, I decided to finish making the ones I had cut out and ready to sew. With the weather a bit cool here in east central Illinois during the beginning of May, these still seem useful and can make nice simple gifts.
So I will be at the Farmer City American Legion tomorrow with my “wares” for the Spring Fling Craft fair.
There is also a city wide garage sale happening in Farmer City so you can fing garage sale prices there and then come spend your savings at the Craft Show.

Just a reminder of what is happening on Mother's Day weekend.

I haven’t posted for some time but it isn’t because I haven’t been sewing. I finished some projects I do every year for donations to agencies serving families, made some things for my family and myself, and then started adding to my inventory as I get ready for the upcoming start of the various vendor and craft events/festivals/ fairs that I take my “wares” to each year. I was grounded from more physical activity and running around during March and early April when I had cataract surgery, but sewing was an acceptable activity especially since my new lenses give me 20/20 vision again. That was a very pleasant unexpected outcome.
In May, I have 3 (possibly 4) events.
May 2 at the VFW in Farmer City, Illinois
May 9 at Harvest Moon Drive In in Gibson City, Illinois
May 15-16 at the Champaign County Farm Bureau building for the CCHCE Spring Plant/Craft/Bake sale.
I just found out that Mary,Maude, and Me in Monticello, Illinois will be restarting their monthly event on May 10 so I will have to see how my energy is for two events in one weekend.
Anyway, here are some of the latest items I finished. Some of them are variations of some patterns I have used a lot. Some are just made up styles of bags just because I like to let some bags evolve to fit some fabric I have. I haven’t made as many blankets this year because I still have a lot in my stash and the ones I hand quilt take quite a bit of time. I did make some more summer light weight receiving blankets/nursing covers with the clip -on neck band to hold them up. I still have some flannel ones in my stash but with summer coming, those don’t sound as appealing.
One of the new items I started making are kitchen boas. They are a piece of fabric with kitchen towels attached to each end so it fits around the neck while you are cooking or washing up dishes. I thought it was an interesting concept so after selling a couple, I made a few more just to see if people might like them.
I do have more bags cut out ready to sew so I will have plenty to keep me busy when it gets really hot here in Illinois and I don’t feel like being outside.

Not sure why but I am still just randomly making bags without using a pattern and in this case, a plan. I think the cold weather this winter has gone to my head.
