The Old Elephant Who Returned to an Empty Waterhole
For more than fifty years, the enormous bull elephant remembered one place.
A small waterhole hidden deep in the African wilderness.
He had first visited it when he was only a calf, walking between his mother and the other elephants.
Year after year, he returned.
Even during the harshest dry seasons, he seemed to remember exactly where to go.
But one year, the rains barely came.
The old elephant walked for days beneath the burning sun until he finally reached the place stored in his memory.
Then he stopped.
The water was gone.
Only cracked earth remained.
The giant walked slowly into the empty waterhole and began digging with his feet and trunk.
Again and again, he pushed away the dry soil.
But there was no water beneath it.
As evening approached, he eventually stopped digging.
He stood silently in the middle of the place where he had once drunk beside his mother decades earlier.
Then something unexpected happened.
A small herd appeared in the distance.
Among them were several young calves.
The exhausted bull lifted his head and began walking again.
Instead of remaining at the empty waterhole, he followed the herd toward another part of the wilderness.
The place he remembered could no longer save him.
But the elephants ahead of him knew another way.
Sometimes even the oldest elephant must follow the youngest to survive. 🐘
