I have contemplated posting for quite sometime. As many of you have noticed, I no longer post projects or advertise items for sale. I do woodwork as a side job and have a full time job mon-fri. When I was really advertising, id work my fulltime job mon-fri, come home, see my daughter for a minute, change clothes and head to the shop till about 1030-11 . That was 5 days a week after my fulltime job. Then saturdays were sunup to sundown as well as most sundays. And when i would quote a price, i would get “well i can get that at walmart or ikea for 1/3 the price”. And you can. But you trade quality for price. You cant have both. Just as an example, a cutting board at walmart will run you $20. But it will not last generations. A true cutting board of walnut or maple or cherry will be passed down for generations if taken care of properly and oiled and cleaned and dried properly. The cost of such board, isnt cheap. Just the wood alone is $12 per board foot. That is a 12 inch by 12inch square, 1 inch thick. $12. Then that board has to be cut into strips. Then ran across a jointer, then ran through a planer for thickness, sanded, then glued. After gluing, the board is ran back through a planer, sanded at 3 different grits of sandpaper for smoothness. A juice groove cut in by hand and handles cut in by hand. Then mineral spirits applied to the board and wiped down then butcher block wax used. $50 in materials and not to mention the hours it took to assemble. For me to make more than $5 an hour for my time, id sell this board for $100. For something hand made, you will pay more but you will get more and it will outlast any mass produced item from walmart or ikea.
