Lobby, house lights down. Carnation in two pinks, liatris for the vertical, green dianthus and a yellow pincushion for the punctuation. Pale blue vessel to keep it from disappearing into the dark millwork. Carnations are still underrated. Massed tightly and kept to two tones, they hold light better than almost anything at this price.

Cool and warm, same flower. Pink cymbidium with fig branch and safflower, cut for a room of grey oak and charcoal panel. Peach cymbidium with flowering gum and magnolia leaf, cut for warm wood and a lot of afternoon light. We choose the orchid last, not first. The room decides.

Peach dahlia, orange garden rose, blush spider mum, feverfew for the small white break. Low and wide so it clears sightlines across the bar.

Bar arrangements have a harder job than most people think. Guests are eighteen inches away for two hours, so nothing can be faked at that distance.

Two arrangements where the flower isn't the hardest part.

Anthurium against cut wood rounds — the grain and the lacquer-red spathe are doing the same trick from opposite directions, one matte and one gloss. Pincushion protea with chestnut burrs and gum nuts, all spike and seed, nothing soft anywhere in it.

Texture holds up under bad lighting and long weeks. Worth building around when a piece has to sit in a lobby for ten days.
