A cup of coffee can change the world.

Ok. A slight exaggeration, perhaps, but the simple act of offering coffee and donuts at our monthly Mobile Food Pantry, transformed the atmosphere as recipients became guests and volunteers were now hosts.

Once a month, the McCormick Tribune YMCA partners with Greater Chicago Food Depository to offer fresh produce to our neighbors. No matter how cold or wet it is outside, you can find people lining up outside hours before distribution starts.

Of course, we invite them to wait inside in the warmth of our gym, but it got us thinking about how we could make better use of their time. A small first step was simply to add coffee and donuts, pipe in a little music and say thank you for coming.

And just like that, the "us" and "them" disappeared and a little joy entered the room.

Bryan Stevenson talks about how if you want to change the world, the first step is to change the narrative. While our monthly food distribution is a much needed resource, it won't end hunger or eliminate food deserts.

But by adding a little humanity to the process, we plant seeds of hope and change in each other, which is one step towards a different story for us all.

In the spirit of Groucho Marx, who said "I don't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member..."

I love volunteering because it tends to bring together people from all different lived experiences who may otherwise not cross paths or break bread together.

Here we have an indomitable survivor activist, a physician, a recent migrant and a person serving a post-conviction community sentence, all of us working together to prepare for next Friday's National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence.

At the recent 15th Reunion, the former president reminded us of the importance of actually connecting with others, the power of walking into a room holding people who share your interests and passions only to be surprised by who you find there.

It's one of the best ways to knock down the stereotypes that can divide us, which also happens to be one of the best pathways to change.

Need a reason to feel hopeful about the future of our democracy?

Meet the Mikva Challenge's Safety & Justice Council!

We had such a great time meeting with these young leaders today, for a conversation about the need to extend the Freedom of Information Action to Illinois's Judicial Branch (and the Juvenile Detention Centers!) and to strategize about how to move the bill (HB2455) forward. So many great questions AND ideas!!

And if you're not impressed already, some of the young high schoolers in this picture already serve as election judges!

As Mikva Challenge motto says: Democracy is a verb!! Thanks so much for inviting us today!

Great day coming together  to serve in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy. Organized by and , people came from all over to support four local organizations: , , ,  .

As we say goodbye to 2022, I hope you have reasons to be grateful and that the new year ahead holds promise and possibility for you and your loved ones.

Over the last few months, it has been wonderful to connect with customers from Chicago and across 17 states and re-enter the entrepreneurial world. As everyone knows, starting a small business is no easy task, and I am truly grateful for the support and encouragement of so many who have helped in ways big and small. Thank you.

Even more so, it has been humbling and inspiring to spotlight some of the good people doing great things in Chicago. Though I wish we could have given more, we were happy to donate G4G to community organizations and plan to expand our support with financial contributions in 2023.

In that spirit, I am sharing a reflection on what it means to give. I wrote it several years ago, but think it is a good reminder that in the face of what can feel like insurmountable need, we all have something to offer that matters.

Wishing you all best in the new year to come, with gratitude for your support,
