I don't think you could pay me to use paper plates. I get too much joy from history. I feel like a part of something bigger. One rinse and it's ready to use again and again. No landfills need be involved. These Blue Willow Grill plates from restaurants long shuttered are the perfect serving pieces for little hands that may not be as nimble. Seventy years ago, these plates likely held dinners of baked chicken, mashed potatoes and corn, served by the kind hands of a woman named Ruby, and set onto a checkered tablecloth next to a cup she deftly filled with steaming coffee. Don't let them fool you, these ironstone plates can take a beating. That's why they were used in the restaurant industry. And if you are six years old, the Blue Willow pattern and its story, set right before you, will give you something to discuss while you avoid eating your peas. And the divided sections make sure that if you are a picky two year old, your food doesn't touch each other. Of course, memories exist around paper plates but I'm hoping that the children remember how much we love them each time they see Blue Willow, long after we may be gone.

It has been almost 10 months since we took the children into our home. In that time, priorities have shifted, as they do. We love the children dearly and every effort has been worth it. However, I do sometimes miss the peace and quiet and the opportunity to indulge in collecting and decorating and painting and gardening. But those indulgences will return in due time. I just passed this room as I entered the house and I realized that even with paintings still waiting to be hung and dusting to a minimum, we are still so blessed in every single aspect of our lives. Loveliness surrounds us. It may be dusty but it's there. Beauty is my respite from the world. I make no apologies for that. There is a tiny army just waiting to help me dust but now is not the time. For now, we catch up on medical care and education and just the pure joy of childhood. I have convinced myself that the dust is preserving the antiques. I might be right, I might be wrong, but this is the world I created and I make the rules.

The legend of Marie Antoinette and the Maine C**n cats suggests the Queen sent her six favorite Turkish Angora cats to Wiscasset, Maine, to escape the French Revolution. Though she never arrived, the cats did, breeding with local cats to produce the Maine C**n breed.
Henry was found as a tiny kitten in a remote area, on a sewer grate. I think he has always known he is truly royalty, however.
Do you see Marie Antoinette's initials on the chair above him? He knows.

I still cannot believe that I planted this entire boxwood parterre all by myself. There are over 500 boxwood shrubs here. I had no idea what I was doing. I bought everything from The Home Depot . I dug down into our hardpan clay soil about 2 ft and carried it over into the empty lot next door and filled it with compost soil. I learned so much from Sir Roy String's books. He created The Laskett Gardens with his late wife.
I never dreamed that I could have something this beautiful. I've always labored under the delusion that if something can be done then I can do it myself. Sometimes I'm right.

"There are too many paintings."
"The paintings are too close together."
"How do you dust everything?"
"This gives me claustrophobia."
"There's so much blue it hurts my eyes."
"I don't see any dogs in your house so why do you have so many dog paintings?"
"I'm surprised that wall is still standing."
"Nightmare."
" It bothers me that everything is so crooked".

I still love it so!

I did not create this vignette in our English style breakfast room.
This Colonial Williamsburg blue and white porcelain shell trinket dish is the resting place for toys children cannot bring to breakfast; the bouncy-ball was a reward from the dentist and the tiny violin that plays real music was a gift for paying attention to the teacher for twenty lessons in a row. I have no idea what that tiny silver pin is, or where it is from. I'm holding on to it, just in case.
The children have been with us for nine months and our worlds have become beautifully intertwined.

Henry, who my friend's son found on a sewer grate in the middle of nowhere, has grown to be such a lovely boy. As a Maine c**n, he will continue to grow for the next three years!
The garden is coming to life and Henry is documenting all of it❤️

We are finally rounding the corner with medical appointments for the children. This is their little busy counter where tea parties and dreams begin. I miss my artistic outlets and my friends, like you!
The children would draw all day and into the night if we allowed it! Which reminds me, I need more paper!
Hoping you are well❤️
