For ten years, Ojibwe author Angeline Boulley worked on a story she had been carrying with her since adolescence. While balancing a full-time career in Indian education, she continued writing what would eventually become Firekeeper’s Daughter. When the novel was finally released in 2021, it became a #1 New York Times bestseller and introduced readers around the world to a powerful story grounded in Ojibwe culture, identity, and community.

Now, that journey is reaching an even larger audience. Firekeeper’s Daughter is being adapted into a television series by Netflix and Higher Ground Productions, the company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. Boulley has emphasized the importance of authentic Indigenous representation throughout the project, helping ensure Native voices remain involved both on screen and behind the scenes. The adaptation includes Ojibwe writer Wenonah Wilms and showrunner Mickey Fisher, keeping Indigenous perspectives at the heart of the series.

The novel follows Daunis Fontaine, a biracial Ojibwe teenager navigating family, identity, and community while becoming involved in an FBI investigation. Praised for blending suspense with an authentic portrayal of contemporary Ojibwe life, the book has resonated with readers far beyond Indigenous communities. Its success highlights a growing appetite for stories told by Indigenous creators and demonstrates the power of representation when communities are given the opportunity to tell their own stories. 📚🪶🎬
