The Vision Behind Soft Edges
"Soft Edges invites audiences to reconsider what we value in art and emphasizes craft as not just something that performs a function but mirrors culture, the region, and its people." — Curator Devan Horton
For generations, craft traditions have carried stories of place, family, and community. Quilting, weaving, embroidery, basketry, ceramics, broom-making, and textile work preserve knowledge passed from one generation to the next, connecting us to our environment and to one another.
With "Soft Edges," curator Devan Horton brings together six regional women artists whose practices challenge the traditional divide between fine art and craft. Working across diverse materials and disciplines, each artist draws upon inherited techniques while pushing them in new and unexpected directions. Together, their work demonstrates that craft is not simply a means of making—it is a language that reflects culture, identity, sustainability, and regional experience.
Over the coming weeks, we'll introduce each of the artists featured in Soft Edges and explore the ideas, materials, and traditions that shape their work.
