🔥 700 SQ. FT. OF BLUE STORM — AND NOT A BORING PAVER IN SIGHT. 🔥

This is what happens when somebody says, “I don’t want my patio to look like everybody else’s.”

We just transformed this space with roughly 700 square feet of our Blue Storm natural flagstone, and this stone absolutely showed off.

Deep blue. Steel gray. Rust. Copper. Charcoal. Every piece is different, every edge is natural, and the entire patio was laid out piece-by-piece like one massive stone puzzle.

But we weren’t stopping at the patio.

We wrapped the post bases in custom natural-stone veneer, tying the structure directly into the patio instead of making the posts look like an afterthought.

Then we built two custom dry-stacked veneer walls with hand-selected natural stone and custom-cut caps:

🪨 One becomes a built-in stone bench.
🍻 The other becomes a custom bar top.

And around the outside? Those massive natural boulders give the patio an edge that concrete curbing could never touch.

This isn’t manufactured stone stamped out of a mold.

This isn’t another cookie-cutter patio from aisle 14 at the big-box store.

This is real stone.

Heavy. Imperfect. One-of-a-kind.

The kind of material that looks better the older it gets.

🪨 ROCK SCHOOL: STOP PICKING STONE BEFORE YOU KNOW HOW YOU’RE INSTALLING IT.

This is backwards more often than you’d think.

Someone falls in love with a stone…

Buys a bunch of it…

THEN starts figuring out how they’re going to install it.

Sometimes that works.

Sometimes it becomes a very expensive pile of rocks sitting beside the garage while everybody avoids talking about it. 😂

Before buying material, figure out:

👉 What are you building?

👉 Is it pedestrian or vehicle traffic?

👉 Is the stone being dry-laid or mortared?

👉 What kind of base will it have?

👉 How much grade change are you dealing with?

👉 How will water move through the area?

👉 Do you need consistent thickness or can the installation accommodate natural variation?

👉 How are you physically getting the material into the project area?

That LAST ONE gets forgotten constantly.

A beautiful 3,000-pound slab isn’t nearly as exciting when your only access is a 36-inch gate. 😂

Design, access, equipment and installation method should influence the stone you choose — not come afterward.

That’s one reason we like customers talking to us before ordering material.

Sometimes we’ll tell you exactly what we’d use.

Sometimes we’ll show you three better options.

And occasionally we’ll save you from buying something that would’ve made your installer hate you.

🚨 BLUE STORM — LAST LOAD OF THE SEASON 🚨

Well… we got our hands on 14 more pallets of Blue Storm Flagstone — and that’s it.

Fourteen pallets. No backup load. No “we’ll grab some more next week.”

This material is getting harder and harder to get, and we’re officially running out at the source for the season.

And honestly… that’s part of what makes Blue Storm so damn cool. 😎

Deep blues. Charcoal. Gray. Natural movement and variation in every piece. This isn’t the same cookie-cutter stone sitting in every landscape yard in town.

🪨 APPARENTLY EVERYBODY DECIDED THEY NEEDED ROCKS AT THE SAME TIME. 😂

Today has been one of THOSE days at DeezRocks.

Load it.
Strap it.
Deliver it.
Unload it.
Turn around.
Do it again.

Big statement boulders heading out.

Pallets of natural stone heading out.

More loads getting staged while the truck is already making deliveries.

And somewhere in the middle of all this, our diesel gauge is dropping faster than we can fill the damn thing. 😂⛽️

Diesel isn’t cheap… but neither is sitting around doing nothing.

So we’ll keep feeding the trucks and moving ROCKS.

And we’re not talking about tossing a couple bags of mulch in the back of a Subaru.

Some of these pieces require cranes, equipment, heavy trucks and a little bit of questionable decision-making from guys who apparently thought selling giant rocks for a living sounded like a good idea. 😂

But seeing this much material heading out to customer projects?

That’s a good day.

We seriously appreciate everyone keeping us this busy.

🪨 ROCK SCHOOL: DON’T FORGET ABOUT WATER.

One of the fastest ways to screw up a beautiful stone landscape?

Ignore where the water is going to go.

Water doesn’t care how much your project cost.

It doesn’t care how good the patio looks.

And it definitely doesn’t care that you spent Saturday afternoon getting every rock positioned perfectly. 😂

Water is going downhill.

Your job is to decide WHERE.

Whenever we’re planning patios, rockeries, water features or large landscape stone, drainage should be part of the design from the beginning.

A few things to think about:

👉 Where does roof runoff go?

👉 Which direction does the existing ground naturally drain?

👉 Are you creating a low spot behind a rockery?

👉 Could water collect underneath your flagstone?

👉 Are large boulders accidentally creating little dams?

👉 Where will water go during a heavy storm or snowmelt?

The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate water.

It’s to CONTROL it.

That can mean properly grading the site, installing compacted aggregate correctly, using drain rock where appropriate, creating drainage paths or installing an actual drainage system when the site requires it.

Here’s the important part:

Drainage is a whole lot cheaper to think about BEFORE several tons of rock are installed.

Moving a 3,000-pound boulder because somebody suddenly discovered where the water goes is what we professionally refer to as:

“Well… sh*t.” 😂

🪨 ROCK SCHOOL: THICKER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER — BUT TOO THIN CAN BITE YOU.

When people shop for flagstone, one of the first things they notice is color.

One of the things they SHOULD be looking at?

Thickness.

Because thickness affects how that stone should be installed.

For pedestrian patios and walkways, a heavier, thicker flagstone can often be installed over a properly prepared compacted aggregate base.

But as stone gets thinner, having consistent support underneath it becomes much more important.

Why?

Natural stone is strong…

Until you leave part of it unsupported and put somebody’s 230-pound Uncle Randy directly over that spot at Thanksgiving. 😂

SNAP.

That’s why a good flagstone installation isn’t just about making the top look pretty.

What’s UNDER the stone matters:

👉 Proper excavation
👉 Compacted base
👉 Drainage
👉 Consistent support
👉 Correct stone selection
👉 Proper joint spacing
👉 Keeping individual stones stable

A beautiful $10,000 pile of flagstone installed over a garbage base is still a garbage patio.

The foundation is what makes the finished project last.
