Taking time from the garden to practice Ikenobo (school of Ikebana). These designs are arranged in a straight line to form a fan-like structure. They can use up to three different types of flowers. In this session, we used one, spider mums. They can also have up to eleven flowers. Working with five today was plenty. When the design is completed, it looks so simple and yet many precise steps have led to the finished product. It is so nice to take a short break and be a student during this busy season.

Yellow and purple abound in the cut flower garden this week. The Henry Eilers have started to bloom and the Ageratum mix well with the yellow calendula. I will definitely be using these colors this week for and am excited to work with the newly blooming sunflowers, too.

Nothing says summer like lillies. Featured here are tiger lillies, liatris, rudbeckia, status, and native coneflowers. I used the tiger lillies as my focal flowers and chose flower combinations to pick up the colors within them. Who doesn’t love the perfect contrast of purple, oranges and yellows?

The color combinations this week are beautiful. Everywhere I look I see purple, orange and yellow hues taking over the once pink and white landscape. Bees and butterflies are everywhere. Life is good in the cut flower garden.

I love my Monday garden maintenance day. I get to see the progress the flowers have made over the weekend. Today the Lisianthus are just stunning. The weather had been good to them.
