I have a confession…
I spend an embarrassing amount of time scrolling Zillow in Portland.
Not because I’m planning a move tomorrow, but because I like imagining where the new version of me would live if I ever found my way back.
Years ago, when I lived there, I’d log miles wandering through the West Hills. I’d slow down in front of certain houses, wondering what they looked like inside and imagining the lives of the people who lived there.
Apparently, I haven’t outgrown that habit.
This house stopped me in my tracks.
Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Robert Oshatz, it’s still under construction and unlike anything else I’ve seen. It’s bold, brilliant, sculptural, and completely unconcerned with fitting in.
It’s the kind of home that asks you to have an opinion. Some people will think it’s a work of art. Others will wonder what on earth they were thinking.
I love that.
Good design doesn’t always have to be comfortable or universally loved. Sometimes it’s simply an expression of someone’s imagination, built without asking for permission.
Maybe that’s why it caught my attention.
I think the older I get, the more I’m drawn to people and places that are willing to be unique & unapologetically themselves.
And maybe the houses that stop us have less to do with where we want to live and more to do with who we’re becoming.
