Allergy season is fast approaching! If you suffer from seasonal allergies you may benefit from taking raw local honey (a teaspoon per day) starting now to prevent your seasonal allergies! I noticed yesterday that the bees are already beginning to bring in some pollen to the hive. If you need some honey, I can help!

In the south we don't get a lot of snow and our winter temperatures are generally just above freezing for most of the season so when we do get snow, it doesn't last very long. Once temperatures get below 50°F the bees will cluster. In the winter bees stay clustered in a ball in the hive and vibrate their wing muscles which generates heat to keep them warm and alive throughout the cold winter months. In more harsh climates where temperatures are consistently at or below freezing, beekeepers will assist the bees by wrapping the hives with an insulating blanket to help hold in the heat that the cluster generates. While we may not see the bees during winter months, they are not hibernating. They still need to eat and will break away from the cluster to feed on honey stored in the hive. Bees in the cluster will take turns leaving and coming back to the cluster to feed. If their honey stores are too far away from the cluster or they are away from the cluster for too long, and the temperatures are too low, they will freeze while feeding. It is important that they have sufficient honey in the hive and that there is no extra space in the hive to help prevent the bees from freezing during the winter. They remain active all year long and on warm winter days in the south, bees will leave the hive for short periods to take some cleansing flights and forage for any resources, like water, that may be available.
