Not all art supplies are created equal. 🎨
And with kids, the difference really matters.
A crayon that barely leaves color means pressing harder.
A colored pencil with poor pigment can make coloring feel like work.
An oil pastel that’s too hard misses the whole joy of oil pastels.
I’ve tested and used a LOT of art materials — at home with my son, in my own work, and now with my students — and I definitely have favorites. There are some I keep reaching for, some that are perfectly fine, and some I’d happily leave on the shelf. 😅
So I put together my take on the materials kids use most: the good, the not-so-good, who they work best for, and what I’d actually choose.
And because the brand matters too, I made a separate Kid-Tested Art Supply Guide with the brands I recommend for each medium.

Scratch art paper — but make it yourself. 🌈🖤
We tested this with both crayons AND oil pastels, and honestly, the results were pretty much the same.

But if kids are making the paper themselves, I’d pick oil pastels every time. They’re softer, quicker to cover the page with, and little hands don’t have to work nearly as hard.

Then comes the best part… scratching through that black layer and discovering all the color underneath. ✨
A simple one to make ahead and pull out whenever you hear those famous words: “I’m bored.” 😄

There really is something special about stepping into another artist’s creative space. As makers, it’s easy to spend most of our time teaching, planning, or creating. But being a student again is a reminder of how much joy there is in learning something new. Thank you, iRidescent Batik Studio for such a welcoming and inspiring workshop. I came home with new skills, a beautiful piece, and lots of inspiration.

iRidescent Batik Studio offers a lot of different Batik experiences. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to tap into their creative side.
