Some of the best stories begin with an unexpected detour. ❤️
In early 1958, Eugene and Barbara Childress were living in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with their five children when they set out for California in search of better job opportunities. But along the way, their car broke down on Grand Avenue in Dallas.
Since repairs would take a few days, both Eugene and Barbara decided to look around and found work at a local upholstery shop. Just a few months later, they took a leap of faith and started their own business. By the end of 1958, Childress Furniture & Fabrics was born.
From the very beginning, Eugene and Barbara lived by one simple motto, “Always do it right.” That commitment to treating customers the right way helped turn Childress into a Dallas staple that families throughout Texas have come to know and love.
All five of the Childress children grew up around the shop and worked in the family business. Kenny Childress, who runs the showroom and shop, had his first job driving the delivery truck.
Over the last 68 years, we’ve had the privilege of building custom furniture for tens of thousands of customers and even seeing our work featured on popular TV shows and movies.
Although Eugene passed away in 2000, his legacy lives on. Today, three of the Childress children continue to run the business while carrying on the same values that started it all nearly 70 years ago. Barbara still keeps a close eye on the business she helped build and loves seeing it continue to grow.
We’re incredibly thankful for every customer who has been part of our journey. Your support has allowed our family’s story to continue for generations, and we can’t wait to help create beautiful spaces for many more years to come! ❤️
