Some finishes are easier to remove than others. This furniture had a urethane finish, which we do not recommend. It requires stripping off the urethane, scraping and cleaning, and sanding to get it all off. The finish we usually use is a water based stain that comes off without much of a fuss when it's time to refinish. This is a picture of chairs after each step of the process.

If you have wood patio furniture and want to refinish it, don't use a clear coat like urethane. Urethane will fail in a year or 2 in the sun, and then need to be removed. Removing urethane off of outdoor wood furniture can be 2 or 3 times the cost of the best finishes. Here's a set that had to be stripped, cleaned, sanded, and refinished.

One of the reasons teak refinishers usually don't recommend using teak oil on outdoor teak is that it's difficult to remove. Not much of the old oil came off after cleaning. The chair on the left has not been cleaned, the chair in the middle has been cleaned, and the chair on the right has been cleaned and sanded.
