The Hungry Saw

The Hungry Saw The Hungry Saw is about striving for excellence in craftsmanship, customer satisfaction, and art. God has brought me to be a businessman and a craftsman.

In learning how to be both of these, I have deduced and committed to a few things:
Business:
If business is first about money, growth, and the bottom dollar, I thing that is a sad thing indeed. I have found business to be an enjoyable thing, but the lure to sacrifice all for the dollar is a fierce struggle. I know my integrity is not worth any amount of money. I am a fan of small business, and I w

ant to run mine with full honesty and disclosure. I am not a success at business based on how much income I create, but on these: if I have provided for my family as God calls me to do, if I have loved my work and gone home tired at the end of the day, if I have dealt well with people and uplifted those around me, and if I have brought glory to God by my integrity and vigor. If I have done anything even the slightest bit sketchy or dishonest, let me know, that I make make amends. Craftsmanship:
The word "craftsman" is a rare word these days, though it is making a comeback. A craftsman is not a person who builds things, or one who can slap something together and make money. A craftsman is an artist, a skilled worker at his particular craft. A craftsman is someone you pay to do something that you can't do yourself. It is my goal to be a master craftsman in the field of woodworking, though I may never feel like I get there. Woodworking is an incredibly large field of skill and technique, and I continue to learn and practice in every area. My desire is to inspire the customer to think of great things, to push the limits of what wood can do (as many are currently doing), and to make peoples dreams reality, even in small pieces. It doesn't have to be epic proportions to be worthy of skill and excellence. At the Shop of The Hungry Saw, development, experimenting, and learning are always happening. There is a sign over the door that dedicates all things in the Shop to God. He will use the shop for His glory and purpose. I simply get to be a part of it. So if you choose The Hungry Saw, know this: you are a blessing from God to me, for the joy of my work and the provision of my family. I will strive for the utmost honesty and fairness in my business dealings. I will strive in my practiced skills to give you a finished piece that you and I are both fully pleased with. I will strive to learn, and to teach, as each are appropriate. Thank you for choosing The Hungry Saw

It's been on the list to add a second barrel to the dust collector because one barrel fills up so fast when I'm planing large amounts of wood. Instead of buying a setup, which would have cost about $800, I bought a used one for $30 that used to have cherry juice concentrate in it, and made an insert sleeve out of a scrap piece of bendy board. When I talked to the manufacturer about doing this they said they had never seen anyone put a second barrel on it, but I have seen two or three put on a different brand. It's in prototype phase because the dust comes down in a spiral and depending on where the wye is, it may fill one barrel faster than the other. So far it's pretty close, but I may need to lower the wye a bit to accomplish this.

A builder client wanted me to laminate a desk in their office with white oak, where it was previously just painted grey. Because of the angle and the front lip this was way more challenging than it may look, and I had to adjust for cutting the angle slightly off on one piece. What a relief when it was done!

I use these screws almost exclusively for installing drawer fronts onto drawers, and based on the volume, I can install 3200 drawers before I run out. When buying bulk, I figure things will last me somewhere around a decade, but I am surprised at times to see how much more quickly I run out, due to production volume. But thats a lot of drawers, so we shall see...

The rest of the bathroom with the walnut vanity includes a floor-to-ceiling wall-to-wall cabinet in the toilet room, and two shallow cabinets on either side of one of the closet doors. Paint grade with prefinished interiors, they will make the walnut centerpiece stand out all the more.

In the 9.5 years since I made my first cabinet for a client, I think this is the first one I've made out of walnut. I also rarely do overlay style, but they preferred the more traditional look. It turns out, walnut is making a bit of a comeback, and though they were uncertain of the look initially, they absolutely loved the end result. The trim and foot details mixed with the rich vibrant wood grain makes it stunning! The interior is prefinished, and the walnut is finished with odie's oil for that natural quality feel.

This door was commissioned by a home builder for the master bathroom. Its 48-3/4 wide and 125 tall. I made the body a tortion box for stability and also weight, because the wood on the front had a decent amount of weight already. Two layers of plywood or MDF would have weighed a ton, and would be at risk of warping more. I laminated the front and back with rift white oak veneer, and used the milcasa hidden door hardware. It was definitely challenging to dial in, in order to get it to move properly and have the soft close work, but we got it just right, and the client said it was her favorite part of the whole house!

These walnut panels above the fireplace will largely (sadly) be covered by a large TV, but it will still be a great backdrop! The slot at the top is the heat vent for the fireplace at the bottom. The grain normally would look continuous vertically, but I used leftover sheets from another project in the house in order to save a few hundred dollars on materials, and there were some blemishes I had to work around.
The picture doesn't really give scale to how big this thing is. It's almost 9ft wide and 6ft tall.
The second picture shows it unfinished, and you can see how starkly walnut richens with finish.

I made a little montage to show this project from lumber to finished. Its a 104" square reeded ceiling detail in white oak, which required 213 1/2 diameter half round reeds.

I had to join, plane, rip, and re-plane the lumber down to 1/2" pieces about 3" wide, all about 9ft long. Then run them through the auto feeder on the router to make the half-round, then cut that off and do it all over. It took 75 seconds per mill but I was able to do some other things back and forth while they fed through. It works best to glue them on the MDF sub-straight individually because they tend to warp and want to roll and flip so much.

Fortunately I was not the one who had to install the panels, but I was asked to come back and install a custom air vent cover.

It's fun to see something I made on a house like this.
