A little opinion piece today, on a Sunday
They should just come here the right way…an opinion piece by Tony K
Im not here today trying to reinvent the wheel or chastise anyone when it comes to immigration, however I would like to maybe at least rotate the wheels and educate anyone who believes immigration is some simple process that anyone cant navigate. I will also say from the start, if you don’t see immigrants as humans deserving some love and respect….skip this article. If you are pro-ICE….skip this article. People with that mind set are generally stuck firmly in that belief are not looking to learn, change, or grow. With all that in mind, I want to use a term and explain in this article why it is a problem…. “They should just come here the right way”.
By now we have all heard someone say that, maybe its just me but when I hear someone say that it feels very much like “What was she wearing”. There is a lot of things awful people say to deflect from them needing to be better people. But I want to actually present to you some thoughts on the process and experience…..and spoiler alert a lot of what I am going to say will come from direct experiences I have had with people coming into the country. Ranging from friends who recounted their experience all the way to when I was an intern for Congresswoman Robin Kelly…..about 60% of what formed this opinion is from direct experience, the other 40% is made from a collection of proven data, stories, and proof.
When someone ignorantly states a people should just come here the right way, it ignores very serious and relevant questions/situations.
#1- Does the person have access to a working phone with internet?
Did you know a majority of the experience to become a US citizen is done so using a phone. Ranging from application submission all the way to phone appointments, a lot of what is done is done so over a piece of technology that can be very expensive. And this doesn’t include any fees they have to pay.
#2- Does the person understand the process for that country?
Could you without looking at your phone tell me how to become a legal citizen of a foreign nation? What about the US? And im looking for in depth details and information about it, not just generalized steps anyone could list. What if you don’t know how to read or speak the language fluently. These are actual real situations immigrants coming to America have to work through routinely.
#3- Whats the living conditions and situation?
Remember a few years ago when a caravan of people fled their homes due to safety concerns and showed up at Americas door step desperate for help. That is not a rare occurrence at all, we may not see large scale caravans of people showing up, but I promise you a lot of people are coming here to leave behind very bad living situations. As an aside, remember how difficult it was for the caravan refugees to get access…..they left dangerous conditions and still couldn’t get actual help in a timely manner.
Now this is the point where I just know someone will figure out some silly phrasing of words to deflect from this reality……people who do that I am certain could not live through the experience so many immigrants face, s**t some of the worst most hate filled people you know cant walk down the block without checking their phone and running out of breath. Additionally the 3 questions above ignore a lot of the bad behavior people who take advantage of immigrants try to commit.
In a perfect world yes coming here legally would be a smooth and simple process, but this is not a perfect world. So many of you have become the worst versions of yourself that you completely ignore the humanity in the situation.
Another trope I want to address is how immigrants are so violent…..Because people in a political cult can name like 4 or 5 people killed by an illegal immigrant that someone how means all immigrants are violent and dangerous now? That’s odd, BUT that pendulum swings both ways…So should I assume that anyone who voted Trump is pro pe*****le? Pro Epstein? Pro R**e? Because these are all things one member of that group, the face of that group, has been provably involved in. Lets ask how much we like the sweeping generalizations when they hit everyone, not just those you don’t like.
Also…..the irony of farmers speaking about how much more it cost to operate a farm now and how hard it is to find cheap labor to offset gas/fertilizer/machine cost….yeah I’m not forgetting that irony at all. But I guess being a single issue or hate filled voter may not have been the smartest choice. How’s that Argentina beef?
That’s just my opinion.
