In 2002, Piedmont Craftsmen presented “Strength in Numbers,” an exhibition shown at Green Hill Center (Greensboro), followed by Milton Rhodes Gallery (Winston-Salem). The premise of the show was for a PCI member to partner with another artist to create a collaborative work. The late Ginger Spangler of Lawndale accepted my invitation. We visited “Connemara”, the home of Carl & Lillian Sandburg, to brainstorm an idea. I constructed the house in clay, using an open/closed book concept. The interior space became a stage for Ginger to tell the stories of Carl & Lillian via etched text and collage transfer. My wife, Mona, and I visited the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site this weekend where Sarah Perschall, program manager, accepted the piece into the National Parks Service’s permanent collection.
