I've been promising my dad a new coffee table for quite some time. This past fall, we finally made it happen- heading down to the local sawyer on Marthas Vineyard to pick out two bookmatched slabs of Siberian Elm. We didn't have a design in mind at the time, and instead let the shape of the wood dictate the final outcome. I think it came out pretty darn cool, and I think he did too (based on the quality and duration of the hug I received upon delivery).

Pro tip: it’s usually a good sign when as you’re prepping a table for delivery, your wife asks if you can build the same...

Pro tip: it’s usually a good sign when as you’re prepping a table for delivery, your wife asks if you can build the same one for your own house.

Designed in close collaboration with the client who is a professional architect, the real highlight of this piece is the two curved pedestals. If you follow their curvature at the floor, you will notice that they actually complete a perfect circle together. Each pedestal was made using the barrel making technique of coopering four square boards together, then carving the inside and outside faces to a smooth semi circle. Done primarily with handplanes and a card scraper, because…I’m a glutton for punishment AND great final results.

Lastly, there’s the top. I’ve always loved a boat shape—it gives you the practicality of a rectangle with some of the intimacy of a round table. I lucked out at , digging deep into a pile of Cherry from the “back-back” to handpick four clear, extra-wide boards. Each one has its own mix of straight grain and swirling figure, and together they really come to life.

Safe to say…this design might be making another appearance soon.
