When people think about kitchen design, they usually picture cabinets, countertops, and finishes.

That's actually one of the last parts of my process.

Before selecting materials, I think about how my clients will use the space every day. Where will they prep? Where will they bake? Where will guests gather? How will people move through the room without getting in each other's way?

Only after those questions are answered do the cabinetry, appliances, lighting, and finishes come together.

Beautiful kitchens aren't created by beautiful products alone.

They're created by thoughtful planning.

Why two islands?

At first glance, two kitchen islands might seem like a luxury.

For this client, they were a practical solution.

She wanted a kitchen where she could teach cooking classes while also creating a welcoming space for family and friends. Rather than asking one island to do everything, I divided the kitchen into two distinct work zones.

One island became the primary cleanup and gathering space.

The second became a dedicated baking and teaching station.

Even the lighting plan was designed around those work zones because a successful kitchen is about much more than beautiful finishes.

Great kitchens aren't designed around trends.

They're designed around the people who use them.

For years, "open concept" has been one of the biggest trends in home design.

But I don't remove walls because they're trendy.

I remove them when they solve a problem.

In this home, the enclosed kitchen blocked the lake view and isolated the cook from family and guests during gatherings. Removing the wall completely changed how the home is experienced. Natural light reaches farther into the space, guests stay connected, and everyone can enjoy the view that makes this home special.

The best remodeling decisions aren't about following what's popular.

They're about creating a home that supports the way you live.

One of the biggest improvements in this kitchen wasn't a cabinet.

It was a doorway.

The original entrance to the laundry room limited what was possible in the kitchen. By relocating it just a few inches, I was able to extend the cabinetry to the corner, eliminate wasted space, and create a balanced feature wall with the refrigerator, cooktop, and wall ovens.

Another key decision was removing the wall between the kitchen and living room. That opened the home to the lake view, created seating for guests, and transformed the kitchen into a space that better supports the way this family entertains.

Beautiful kitchens aren't created by chance. They're the result of thoughtful planning and a series of well-considered design decisions.

People sometimes assume designers start with unlimited possibilities.

In reality, every remodel begins with constraints.

An existing structure.

A fixed window.

Plumbing that makes sense to keep.

A budget that needs to be respected.

The challenge isn't wishing those realities away. It's understanding which constraints should remain, which can be changed, and how each decision affects everything else.

That's why I spend far more time planning than selecting finishes.

Beautiful materials matter.

But thoughtful planning is what makes a home work beautifully for years to come.

Most people would think this kitchen needed more space.

It didn't.

By removing a half wall between the kitchen and living room, we gained about 20 inches.

That small change allowed us to:
• Replace a dead corner with a lazy Susan.
• Add a pull-out trash cabinet.
• Increase countertop space.
• Improve storage.
• Create a much more functional layout.

The transformation wasn't about making the room dramatically bigger.

It was about making every inch work harder.

That's why I always begin with the floor plan. Beautiful finishes can't fix a layout that doesn't function well.

Beautiful homes don't happen because every finish is beautiful.

They happen because every design decision has a purpose.

These are a few of the principles that guide every project I design.

✔ Design for how you live—not for the next homeowner.

✔ Great interiors need stars and supporting actors.

✔ Solve the floor plan before choosing finishes.

✔ Beautiful materials matter—but how they work together matters even more.

These principles influence every recommendation I make because the goal isn't simply to create a beautiful room. It's to create a home that feels effortless to live in for years to come.

Which principle do you think is most often overlooked?
