I've never painted a landscape. That's about to change.

I started painting last year, and up until now it's been small subjects: a flower, a window, a piece of fruit, things I could hold inside one frame. I'm about to be somewhere with sweeping views and old stone everywhere I look, and I have a feeling small subjects aren't going to cut it. So I'm trying something new, abstract landscapes, for the first time.

I have no idea if it will work. I don't know if what comes home in my sketchbook will look anything like what I saw. That's kind of the point though. You don't grow as an artist by staying in the lane you already know you're good at.

Tell me in the comments: what's something you've been meaning to try in your own work?

I never paint the same after a trip.

These pieces came out of two different trips, one to Portugal and one to Italy, and neither one is really about the place. They're about what happened to my eye once I was there: the colors I couldn't stop noticing, the shapes that showed up in my sketchbook without me deciding they should. That's the part of travel I keep chasing, not the itinerary, just paying attention.

I've got a trip to Scotland coming up, and I'm already curious what it's going to hand me this time. Tell me in the comments: has travel ever changed what you make, or how you see things?

It's hard to believe I have been in business for myself for 13 years!

Thirteen years ago I did not consider myself an artist. I made these notecards at my kitchen counter by myself and sold them in exactly one store in my little beach town. Fast forward through a roller coaster ride of years, and that turned into a staff, a workshop, designs for hundreds of towns, all 50 states, and Canada, over 5000 mugs produced every year, and a line of more than 20 products. Now I license my artwork to other manufacturers and dream up new products with them.

It really has been an amazing journey, and it all started with these notecards, which you can still get on my website at tandemfortwo.com!

Thank you so much for being along for the ride!

Some of my best ideas do not happen at the worktable. They happen sitting by the water, half paying attention to the waves and half paying attention to whatever is forming in my head.

I have learned to bring a sketchbook or my iPad everywhere, especially to the lake. You never know what you will notice until you are looking for it.

Where do your best ideas find you?

Peaceful evening cruise with my favorite first mate. Max always finds his way to the bow, and some days the whole plan is just this: no itinerary, good light, and an evening on the water!
