A villa carved into the rock, suspended between the Mediterranean and the landscape above. The deep blue facade brings an unexpected stillness to the pale limestone. There is a cool, almost surreal contrast against the warmth of the stone, wood and late afternoon light.
Inside, the same dialogue continues with rich natural materials, warm timber, sculptural furniture and flashes of blue that echo the sea beyond the glass. Nothing feels placed without purpose; the architecture seems to move between being hidden and revealed. A house that doesn’t simply sit on the coast—it becomes part of the cliff, while keeping one feet on the sea.

▼ ｜Idéalement implanté depuis 1964 sur la Passerpromenade au cœur de Merano, l'@ hotelaurorameran est aujourd’hui piloté par la troisième génération. Mélanie Aukenthaler et son frère Philipp ont, sans hésiter, fait appel à feld72_architects et hannespeer pour donner un coup de frais à cet établissement familial de 59 clés avec un brief de rêve : non pas gommer mais, au contraire, amplifier l’audace originelle de l’hôtel.

🇬🇧 Ideally located on Merano’s Passerpromenade since 1964, @ hotelaurorameran is now in the hands of its third generation. Siblings Mélanie Aukenthaler and Philipp brought in feld72_architects and hannespeer with a refreshingly simple brief: don’t erase the hotel’s original boldness — turn it up.⁠

The result? A 59-room family-run hotel that embraces its past without getting stuck in it.

▼ ｜PONDUS CAERULEUM

From the lawn it is all mass: a blue box the size of a small chapel, held off the ground by one pale column, with a tree growing on its roof like a joke at gravity's expense. Then you walk in and the weight turns to light. Steel walls hand the room back to itself. Amber glass glows like a lamp that has been dimmed to the hour just after sunset. A sofa the color of the outside sits sunk into the floor on a bed of glowing glass bricks, a gold-leaf figure watches from the wall, and a face made of a thousand small squares looks down from the bathroom. Blue irises stand in every room, as if the house were still quietly planting itself. Which is the real building, the heavy one you see from the field or the light one you find inside?

▼ ｜SILENTIUM ATRUM

Outside, a hillside with grass on its roof and nothing to prove. Inside, the sun gets rationed: black concrete, steel polished until it hands the room back to itself, one amber bar glowing like the last lit window on a long street. Red appears only where it has been earned, in a velvet blind, a sheep with a name painted beneath it, an elephant assembled from a thousand small squares. All that green out there, and the house chose night, then let the day in through a few carefully cut openings. Which one is the shelter, the field or the dark?

▼ ｜VITRUM VIOLACEUM

From the outside, a quiet violet block between olive trees and cypresses. Then dusk arrives, and the walls of purple glass begin to burn from within magenta at the top, indigo at the bottom, like a sunset that decided to move indoors.

Inside, the steel has aged a hundred years in a single night. Copper lamps arch over ochre velvet. A bonsai sits on a steel table as if it has always been there, and a bronze figure in the corner is caught in the middle of a thought. In the bar, two kings dance above a DJ set and a ch*****ne fridge, while the elephants keep the secret. And on every floor, a rug of dancing figures runs through the rooms, so the house keeps dancing even when nobody is home.
