Sunday Farm Journal:
The second week of spring CSAs included some gorgeous peonies, foxglove, and mock orange! Perennials are such an important player for spring because they can handle the wild weather a little better than annuals. This is my first year doing spring flowers and it’s definitely a learning curve! I am thankful to have the perennials we have but I’ll probably be focusing on them even more in the future.
The farm crew and I are redoing part of the field, moving around the iris and daffodils to make a space for the heirloom mums I have coming next week. They followed along right behind me as I did my transplanting (sometimes sticking their heads between me and the soil for a better look).
This week I got my first succession of zinnias in the ground (about 150 plants) and have been starting sunflowers every week to have blooms all summer long.
Our farm dog had his 11th birthday and tired himself out with his new toys!
Next weekend we have a pop up at so I’ll spend this week prepping for that along with more seed starting and babying newly planting summer flowers.

Flower friends, I have decided to sell roughly 3/4 of my bearded Iris collection. I love them but they just bloom a little too early for where I see my business going in the next 5-10 years. Plus I just have too many! Most are pale blue and yellow but I also have some deep purple. Please message me if you are interested in them. I’d prefer to sell the whole lot together which would be about 60-70 plants!

Sunday Farm Journal:
In the midst of feeling down on myself about pest pressure and other challenges that flower farming brings, this big bumblebee lifted my spirits and reminded me about why we don’t use any type of chemicals on the farm. We also noticed a rustling in the yarrow and found tiny baby bunnies hiding out in there. That explains what’s been happening to all my rudbeckia and lettuce!
I’ve been releasing beneficial insects to help with pests in a natural way but I’m hoping that as our regenerative practices mature that we will need less of them in future years (these bugs are expensive!)
Our banner for the farm stand came in the mail and I love it!
The weather has been hot and dry, poor spring flowers.
I haven’t opened up custom ordering yet but please reach out if you need anything.
Meanwhile I’ll be eating this kale from our garden!

Before and After for Laurie and Jim. Weeding and enhancing their landscape with native plants like Phlox, Coral Bells, and Jacob’s Ladder. Just waiting on some mulch and for things to fill in!

Sunday Farm Journal:

This week we welcomed our spring CSA members for the first week of bouquet pick ups and I felt enormously grateful and in awe of how far our little farm has come in almost exactly two years since we moved here.

The hot weather is speeding the flowers up a bit and things are looking great! All the dahlias are in the ground and irrigation (we only use one wobbler) is connected. Now we just wait for things to bloom!

Sunday Farm Journal:

Things are really looking lush here on the farm! Yarrow, Baptisia, Iris, Foxglove, and Feverfew are putting on lots of growth and I can’t wait to start making bouquets again. Tomorrow is the last day to join our spring CSA!
I’m hoping to have our new farmstand up by the first weekend in June as well.

I have been starting sunflowers and zinnias in the grow room (all in soil blocks this year) and can’t control myself with the number of varieties. Good thing we are killing more grass!

In the front yard food forest we have strawberries flowering, garlic, onion, kale, and herbs growing nice and full.

One of the chickens spent her time digging a hole today, no idea who it was. And the big girls and chicks have been side by side and they seem to be very curious about each other. Only about ten days until we put the chicks outside (yay! IYKYK)

Sunday Farm Journal:

All the rain really had things greening up around here. We’re crossing our fingers than nothing gets damaged by frost tonight and then hopefully we will be in the clear.

The chickens have been enjoying some free time finding bugs and eating w**ds in the garden and lawn. They expect to be let out of their area everyday and are dissatisfied when they are not. The baby chicks had their first brief trip outside earlier this week and didn’t know what to do with themselves.
We had our first harvest and bouquets this weekend but probably won’t have any more for a while as we wait for the rest of the spring flowers get going.

Today I did some ecological restoration on the perimeter of our property and w**d whacked a ton of garlic mustard. We are not mowing some of the back of our property this year because I have seen lots of trillium, Solomon’s seal, and native lily emerging this spring. I am looking forward to grabbing a few more shrubs to continue working on our native hedgerow as well.
