Habetrot is the Celtic fairy patron of spinners. One day, a young girl decided to shirk her spinning responsibilities because she preferred to wander around the meadows. However, her mother would scold her fiercely for not doing her chores. Habetrot, a hag fairy with a hair lip, happened upon the girl and offered to do her spinning for her. The mother was so impressed with the spun flax that she bragged all over the village about her daughter’s abilities and was overheard by the laird who demanded that the girl spin such fine flax for him. Now, the girl really disliked spinning and wasn’t very good at it, so she went back to the meadows and cried until Habetrot came along and offered to spin the flax for her, again. The laird was so impressed with the spun flax that he married the girl, and as a wedding present, he gave her a large room full of flax and a spinning wheel. The girl was horrified and went to find Habetrot, again. Habetrot told the girl to bring the laird to her. Although one of Habetrot’s fellow fairies, Scantlie Mab, warned Habetrot that allowing a human to see their workshop might not be a good idea, Habetrot disagreed and told Scantlie Mab that all would be fine. The girl brought the laird to Habetrot who took him to see her fairy workshop under the hill. There, he spied dozens of hag fairies, bent over their spinning wheels, wetting the flax from their hair lips. Habetrot told the laird that if he made his young bride continue to spin flax, then she would eventually look just like Habetrot and the other spinners. In that instant, the laird forbade the girl from ever spinning, again, and everyone got what they wanted. The laird had a wife. The girl never had to spin. The mother was happy that her daughter was wed to the laird. And Habetrot, Scantlie Mab, and the other fairies could continue doing what they enjoyed, on their own terms, without interference from anyone else.
Spinning, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and weaving have traditionally been activities that draw together groups of people who sit, work with fiber and yarn, and share their stories. At Habetrot’s Wheel, we believe that community lies at the heart of fiber arts, and we invite you to stop in, sit and stitch for a spell (or learn to stitch, as the case may be), and share your stories with us.
Our yarns, spinning fibers, and notions offer something for every budget, with inexpensive options starting around $3.50 to more high-end handpainted yarns around $30. In fact, we currently have more than twenty separate yarn lines that are under $10. We celebrate the roots of our supplier companies and look forward to being able to share their origins with you.
