Fall has officially arrived, daylight is shrinking and the leaves are turning. A is for aluminum. The metal alum [symbol Al and atomic number 13] was known as early as the 5th century BCE but it was not until 1825 that scientists refined it to aluminum. By 1889 scientists had solved the processing problem and during WWI and WWII, aluminum was widely used in production of aircraft. Increased demand for aluminum made it an exchange commodity in 1978. Between 1920-1950, aluminum made its way to wedding registries and millions of households. Decorative hammered aluminum trays, pitchers, snack platters and coasters flooded stores and most households boasted of a variety of aluminum items used for entertaining. Aluminum trays are the original charcuterie boards -- easy to clean, lightweight, versatile and decorative in their own right. We have a good selection of aluminum trays, dishes, measuring cups, cookie cutters and scoops in the Alpha Omega booth.

September 22 is the first official day of fall. What would taste good right about now? Apple pie! We’ve been helping to make apple pies at Columbian Presbyterian Church in LaFayette. They will have their delicious double crust and crumb top apple pies available at the end of September for $15 each. The pies are frozen, unbaked and come with baking instructions so you can have a warm piece of freshly baked pie in 2 hours. Order ahead at 315-677-3293 for end-of-September pick-up. OR, if you prefer to make your own pie we have cookbooks, a great selection of good rolling pins, pie plates, pot holders, aprons, pie servers and dishes in the Alpha Omega booth. OR come to the Shoppes on Saturday or Sunday to enjoy Chef Patrick’s apple crisp in the Apple Kitchen.
