Let books be. Protect the freedom to read. 📚Banned Books Week starts today, and this one matters deeply to me. Books are supposed to challenge us, introduce us to lives and ideas beyond our own, make us uncomfortable, make us think, and sometimes make us feel a little less alone. The freedom to choose what we read, and to allow other people that same freedom, is something I will always be loud about.
Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and brings attention to censorship while supporting the people who continue to defend free and open access to information.
And there are plenty of ways to make some noise this week:
• Challenge your friends to join a Banned Book Club, or start one yourselves.
• Read a banned book, then pass it on.
• Talk about banned books and the freedom to read with the littles in your life.
• Ask your friends to recommend a banned book and add something new to your TBR.
• Support your library, your librarians, and the people doing the work to keep books accessible.
And because putting our money where our very bookish mouth is feels extremely crafted., the Banned Books designs pictured here are 25% off all week, and 100% of the profits from those items will be donated to Friends of the Dwight Foster Public Library.
So now I want to hear from you: What banned book have you read recently? Or drop a recommendation in the comments for the rest of us. Let’s make one hell of a reading list...
