The Art of the Scatter: Light, Form, and the Spirit of Real Food

The call to adventure came from a creative vision: crafting an artful, sprawling layout of produce for an exceptional company’s website background. My challenge was to scatter these fruits and vegetables so they didn’t look too regimented, capturing that “casual” effect while respecting my mentor’s rule of directional lighting. Light had to flow naturally from one source, with subtle shadows adding depth, for a real yet vibrant look.

The task wasn’t without its trials. Time was pressing, as it always is, and the shot demanded a straight-down perspective within a perfect square frame. Square was my choice to allow the creatives involved to use it in multiple ways. I stretched and maneuvered to achieve it, refusing to compromise the vision.

As a photographer who comes prepared, I utilized all the essentials: lighting, stands, lenses, reflectors, diffusion, and, most importantly, the experience honed from soaking up my commercial gurus imagery over the years.

Once set, the scene felt alive—like a bustling, old-time farmers’ market, the sights and colors exploding in a joyful mix of cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, and more. The fresh smell of produce and the collaborative energy in the make-shift warehouse studio which gave this simple shot a richness, and I knew we had captured a moment of vibrant abundance. The warehouse and any of Mother Nature's finest were at my disposal.

Now, this image tells its own story—about the beauty of the whole, natural foods and the thrill of good health, paying tribute to creation. I envision it in well-decorated kitchens, lively restaurant spaces, or spaces for collections, reminding viewers of the goodness in nature’s harvest.

Some of the things I photograph require special lenses for ultra close but this is just close. I was surprised to find 2 bugs making their way around these Bell Peppers. Can you find them? Help, before my salad-making starts!

I had one mission: capture the beach as it had never been seen before. My camera felt like a quiver of arrows, each technique and trick waiting for the perfect moment. People, always a key part of a place’s personality, were everywhere, but they posed a challenge today. Their uniqueness, their distinct appearances, the clothes colors, and the crazy wind-blown hair, would draw attention away from what I wanted—the viewer’s own life to fill the story. I needed to find a way to photograph someone without them being the central focus, allowing the abstract to speak louder than the literal.

The midday sun bathed the sand, making it glisten like polished glass. The water stretched in a perfect horizontal line, its deep blue blending with the sky. As I scouted the beach, a beautiful lady caught my eye, standing in the distance on a sandbar. My instincts kicked in, and I reached for my telephoto lens. I didn’t need any trickery or high-tech adjustments—this time, simplicity was the answer. I wanted the scene to blur into something more universal, more dreamlike.

I twisted the focus ring, pulling the figure out of sharpness, and turning her into a wash of dark black colors and shapes. The abstract was born. She was no longer a specific person, but a figure in motion, living her own story while allowing space for others to see their own lives in her form. As I worked, the sounds of the waves, the laughter of children, and the salty tang of the air all faded. I was lost in the moment, like a kid with a new toy.

There was a brief moment of tension—someone nearby noticed me shooting, but the distance and angle of my lens made it seem like I was focusing on the distant horizon, maybe a ship far out at sea. Conflict was avoided, and I was free to comfortably continue. The photograph was perfect—a soft, blurred figure against the smooth, glistening sand, the bright blue gulf, and the infinite sky. It told a story of life, motion, and the serenity of the beach, abstract yet full of emotion and excitement.

The final shot was a dream, a blend of beauty and anonymity, life and art, as abstract as the water itself. I sell photography, would you like one?

I've got friends who are painters. They show folks "behind the scenes" by setting up a camera and painting. It's not much to show my time working with my images on the computer. Kinda Boring. This is how my images take shape. These are some "work in progress" shots in the Kitchen/Restaurant Collection. Could you see them on your kitchen wall?

Beaches and coastal images are relaxing to me, how bout you? Maybe it's just in our DNA because of the relaxing growing-up trips as we moved through our early years and looked forward to summer vacation. Have you been to the beach?
