Not every person wants or needs someone to take over the design process in their space. Sometimes they just need a little help figuring out what they really like and where to go with it.

Recently, I helped a friend who was creating a lounge space for her new studio. Sustainability was huge and she wanted to use what she already had, or, source items secondhand. The catch? She didn’t know where to start or how these items would work together. She wanted to find the furniture and dĆ©cor herself, but she also wanted someone to bounce ideas off of along the way.

The project was less about my ability to source or decorate and more about helping figure out her direction and what she was looking for.

I created a style quiz, and we spent time talking about the things she was drawn to and what she instinctively wanted to avoid. For example, she loved bohemian, rustic, and industrial styles. Upon initial inspection, these styles may not seem cohesive, but if you look deeper, there are similarities that overlap and compliment. I provided information, not a set of prescribed rules to follow.

Photos were sent back and forth, visual mock-ups of the room were drafted, we talked through finds and how they might impact the overall direction of the room, and spent a day thrifting together. Not only was the trip fun, it was instrumental in finding two important pieces for the room, the coffee table and the coffee bar.

During the process, being challenged on an item helped decide how much she liked or disliked something. If I questioned a piece and she still felt strongly about it, that told her something. A second opinion didn’t change her mind; it solidified the realization that she had already made it.

In the end, the studio has a warm, inviting, eclectic, and sustainable sitting area where guests can sip coffee and talk, brainstorm, or just take a moment. And there is still plenty of room for it to grow. Nothing about the space feels overly finished or set in stone. The shelves and walls are waiting for her pottery, photography, artwork, plants, and the things she will collect and create along the way. The foundation is solid, but the room has space to change and evolve in a natural way. It looks like creative space that is still becoming itself, not a sterile showroom.

Maybe you would like help creating the vision for a room and someone to source the pieces for you. Or maybe you already love the hunt but need some help figuring out what works together. Maybe you just need someone to text from the thrift store when you’re looking at something and thinking, ā€œI love this. Am I crazy?ā€
If you need some help finding your eye, get in touch. I’ll meet you where you are.
