✨Check-up day✨.and the animals absolutely hate it.

I lay eyes on every animal that I have multiple times a day, but animals are very good about hiding any issues they have until it’s too late and around here I’m more of a “prevention instead of treatment” type person. About once a month I like to round them up one by one and put them in the stanchion.

Once they are confined they get checked head to toe. Things that are checked:
🐐Their eyes, ears, mouth, coat, and body condition
🐑Famacha
🐐Feet (This is the day hooves are trimmed)
🐑Any sores, cuts, wounds or injuries
🐐Internal and external parasites
🐑Their weight

This is the day of doctoring anything that needs a little extra attention.

Some animals HATE it and have to have all legs restrained, others tolerate it and just hope I will be quick 😂 Either way all of them still get checked. It’s a good way to familiarize yourself with what’s normal for each animal.

Good animal husbandry isn’t just feeding them and turning them out to pasture. It’s knowing your animals, paying attention to the little things, and catching problems before they become big ones. I’m a firm believer that if you’re going to raise animals, it’s your responsibility to make sure they are as healthy and happy as possible. 💜

🐽Processed in a USDA approved facility

After processing this batch of sows, filling our own personal freezer, and packing up the orders that have already been spoken for, we currently have:
🐷 Breakfast sausage (check website to see which flavors are available)
🐷Pork fat

*Pork fat is great for adding flavor to your beans, soups, and other dishes, frying, sautéing, seasoning cast iron, conditioning wood, and skin care products. It’s also how you make lard.

Our pigs are raised foraging and free grazing in the woods and slow grown at their own pace.

It has been the busiest couple of weeks around here! Everything is currently growing, birthing, or being processed! 🙌🏽

We have:
🐓 Processed our personal batch of meat chickens and got them in the freezer
🌽 Shucked and cut up 10 dozen ears of corn
🌱 Put up 10 lbs of okra
🫘 Put up 30 pints of green beans and then canned even more
🐖 Processed one hog for a gathering plus picked up our other hogs from the processor
🍅 Canned tomatoes and sauces
🥚 Waterglassed and pickled eggs

We have turkeys and chicks hatching, 2 litters of piglets being weaned, and a garden that is producing daily. I completely sold out of products last week and had to make new batches thanks to all of you! 💜

We stay busy and work constantly, but we are always so thankful that the Lord blesses us with so much to do, good enough health to be able to do it, and a full freezer and pantry!

Boer cross buck. Approximately 1 year old. He is polled. He’s ready for new pastures or open for certain trades. He’s sweet! We just don’t want him breeding his mom or our Nigerians and don’t want to have to keep him separated.
