This is why we use only full or top grain leather.

The word "leather" is stamped on six ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐, and the price tag rarely tells you which one you're holding.
That's the whole game. One honest word, stretched to cover everything from a natural hide that outlives you to a cheap plastic sham. ๐ข๐ถ๐น ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐๐๐บ๐ฒ. So we ranked these materials by the only test that can't be marketed around: ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ.
Look at what earns the top. Full-grain hide at the summit: 50 years, softening into patina instead of failing. Below it, top-grain, lightly sanded and finished, good for twenty to fifty. Then genuine leather, the split beneath the surface, ten to twenty. ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น ๐ต๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ the whole way, each tier a little more corrected and coated, each still a material that matures rather than dies.
Then the floor drops out.
Bonded leather is ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ a member of the family: scraps and offcuts ground to dust, glued to a backing, embossed to fake a grain it never had. It cracks and flakes within a few years. Below it, the material ๐๐๐ผ๐ฝ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ at all.
PVC and PU "leather" are ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ, poured from petroleum, wearing a stolen name. At the very bottom sits "vegan leather," refined from that same oil barrel and gone within three years. Then it peels, sheds microplastics into your home and your water, and moves to the landfill, where it stays for centuries.
That gap from top to bottom is what the marketing works hardest to hide. It wants "leather" to feel like one product at six price points, a ladder you climb by spending more. It isn't a ladder. It's a cliff. Somewhere below the middle the word keeps going but the leather stops, and what's left is petroleum with a green label and a three-year clock.
So read the pyramid the way the cash register never will. The top is a ๐ฏ๐๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ of meat the world already eats, kept out of the incinerator and made into something worth inheriting. The bottom is crude oil that was never anything else.
Durability isn't the variable here. ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐๐ is.
